My wife and I recently visited the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania. For those not familiar, on September 11, 2001, the U.S. came under attack when four commercial airliners were hijacked and used to strike targets on the ground. Nearly 3,000 people tragically lost their lives. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, an attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted. However, while attempting to regain control of their hijacked aircraft, the terrorists crashed the plane into a farmer’s field in rural Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board.

The Tower of Voices serves as both a visual and audible reminder of the heroism of the forty passengers and crew of United Flight 93. The tower is a ninety-three foot tall musical instrument holding forty wind chimes, representing the forty passengers and crew members of flight 93. There are no other chime structures like this in the world. The sound produced by each individual chime is designed to be musically compatible with the sound produced by the other chimes in the tower. The intent is to create a set of forty tones (voices).

The tower is ninety-three feet tall from the base to the top. The chimes are constructed of polished aluminum tubes ranging eight to sixteen inches in diameter and approximately five to ten feet in length. The size of each chime is dependent on the musical note and associated frequency that it is intended to produce. The chimes are wind activated and will sound at wind speeds as low as 7-10 mph.

Thanks guys. There is more to the memorial than this tower. In the main building, there are displays explaining and memorializing this site, the Pentagon and the twin towers. You can actually listen to some recordings of calls made by the passengers to their loved ones just before attempting to take the plane back. Very powerful. There is also a wall with a separate marble panel for each victim, with their name carved on it. Finally, the crash site itself is marked with a large boulder placed at the impact site. The field is walled off so the final resting place of the passengers remains undisturbed. Worth the trip if you are ever in this part of the country.
