I'm interested in what products people like to use for a ground pad that they bring with them out in the field. I'm especially interested in solutions that are travel friendly and can fit in your luggage when traveling by air.
I'm thinking of use cases where I have my tripod set up very low to the ground and I want to either sit down low and use the rear LCD tilt-screen, or even lay on my stomach and use the viewfinder.
I've heard about recommendations of cutting out a section from a yoga mat for this type of thing, but I'm wondering what better options might be available. I've also seen people out in the field using a harder/dense foam seat cushion to sit on, that they used by a rocky stream bed.
I know about the foldable sleeping pads/mats, which "could" work, and they can be carried on the side of your backpack, but they seem like overkill for this scenario. I think there are similar products that are designed to be used as seat cushions, but I have no firsthand experience with them.
I'm going to be up in Alaska in December photographing eagles, so I'd definitely like to have something that can provide some insulation from the cold when sitting on the ground.
What solutions have you found that work well for this type of thing?
