This guy took me by surprise. He popped out of a Camellia Bush with pollen all over it's beak , I even had to lean back to get focus , he was so close .
I have darkened (deleted)background. Just wondered what you think !! Is it still a wildlife photo ?.

What a nice surprise. Looks good to me. It is a bird therefore a wildlife photo, despite the 'environment' being removed. Many landscape photographers completely replace the sky but that doesn't seem to make them any less a 'landscape' photo. As the bird is not manipulated then I would say fine. Had you put it in front of the Eiffel Tower then that would have been a different matter 😂

Maurie…

This is an extraordinary photo: a dark subject on an inky black background. I like it!

Many thanks for your kind comments!

Great photo, with or without background.
I find it a bit too dark overall. I would bring up the shadows a bit (don't know if that would interfere with the corrected background)
Something strange (sharp black spots) is going on in the upper left part of the feathers. Looks like some masking error.

Hi, Thanks for commenting. I'm not really sure about the sharp black spots that you mention. here is the original .

I like your decision to isolate the bird. I am still learning LrC so I wonder if there is a way to mask the background (to keep the flower) and bring the exposure up on the bird?

Hi Larry, thanks for commenting.

It would be very easy in LrC to do what you suggest. You would mask the bird using subject or my preference object, and just brighten using the Tone sliders.

Great shot! Love the lack of a background.
I like it and also the catch light in the eye is great! Congrats - almost like an "art" type shot. Well done.
Blackgrounds work sometimes, although one must be careful in choosing when to use them. This photo certainly looks great!

Many thanks for your kind comments!
I feel that I have produced something that is fairly reasonable, from a shot that would otherwise finish in the bin!!

Great capture and shot Maurice, I shall be at the designated spot at 1pm I believe high tide will be about 2.30pm, see you there.

It is a great bird portrait!
I would darken the very light part of feathes on the left and lighten the lights (with didge tool) all over the bird so that it get a kind of graphic-look, that other parts also stand out and not only the feathers on the left. Especiall the part around the eye to drive an atention (lighten lights) and I would try to go with WB to the warm colours - just to check how it would look like, now it has a steel cold look but in nature it is a bit warmer.
So, just the thoughts
