Nice captures. Why 'unexpected'? This is a Hairy Woodpecker. They can be difficult to distinguish from a Downy, but the proportionate size of bill to head is the first clue.

Thanks! And thanks for the info, not heard of the Hairy Woodpecker before *will update title). With the cold/altitude etc, just didn't cross my mind to see a woodpecker.
