Following Steve's latest video I hooked up my ancient 300 4.5 EDIF to a TC 14b and the D7100 and took a couple of shots on our estate today. I've often used a monopd with my Sigma 50-500 with reasonably good results as it is similar to having a gimbal mount. Manual focus is a little more difficult.

Here's an example of a Cape Weaver on a bulrush.
