Valley Carpenter bee?

This guy caught my eye this summer on the sage plants. Only one I had seen. Wore the flower like a fascinator ( women will understand that reference more than guys, maybe)! About 1/2 to 3/4 inches, he was huge. Morning light

Not sure what it is but I don't think it's a carpenter bee. The ones I have around have a hard, black, shiny shell over their rear.
There were some pics online of a male carpenter bee that were matching with the drab green eyes and amber body but ? because it was the only one I have ever seen and I agree, the standard is big black bee here too.
