Hi folks!
I have a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR II and when I engage VR it makes a "bang" and some rattling noise. I think i would have to send it to repair as I also think the VR doesn't work as good as it did before either. Have anybody send their lens to service and fixed or changed the VR? Is this kind of repair expensive?

Hi Kjellis

I have read about a guy online with a similar problem with the focus motor being repaired at a cost of around $599 .. It would also depend on which parts need repaired and/or replaced ..These things never seem to be cheap ...

Call Nikon Support they can give you a ball park idea on cost and timeframe... there are other options as well if you are interested, do a search as there is a thread on some other great options.. Depending on where you live.

Im not sure if the AF motor and VR are in the same unit, I suspect they may not be, but to give you an idea replacing the AF on a 300 2.8 VR1 is about $900 if you send it to APS. I have a slight squeak developing in mine and just talked to Dave yesterday.

@gordon_g I’ve sendt an e-mail to the Nikon repairs here in Norway hoping they will reply with some ansvers after the weekend.

@Harry.G and @Chad Huff I‘m afraid it will be an expensive repair. I‘ve just bought the new Z 70-200 lens and preordered the Z6 II and this repair really do come at a bad time 😇

Best of luck... hopefully it not to bad! I know how you feel on timing, always seems to work like that at times... o_O

Whilst not directly applicable to your situation, I used Nikon Service in the UK to repair the VR on my 24-120mm F/4 lens - it wouldn't work if I zoomed further than 50mm. The service was very overall very good and they also reset the focussing of the lens at the same time. I have used them several times in the past for camera body and lens repairs and always found the results to be excellent.

Nope, not the same unit but I was told they cooperate and need simultaneous ‘repair’
(Had a 200-400 squeeking, they charged me 1800€)
My own and only repair ever done by Nikon Albrecht Germany...
NIE WIEDER!! LOL

Sounds good. Really hoping to get the lens repaired and in order again.

That was really expensive, really hoping my repairs will be cheaper than that! I’m crossing my fingers here now!
