After browsing these forums, I changed from D500 with a 200 500mm zoom.

Thanks for the feedback and advice, changed to D4S with the 500mm f5.6

For my purposes, enthusiastic amateur, I can’t see this being improved in terms of image quality and functionality.

These are OK. If you want to really improve your wildlife images, the best advice I can give it is to get eye level with your subject. You will likely get eye contact and "connect" more with your subject and really change the backgrounds.
 
Great looking bird and your exposure looks perfect. I agree with Karen, a lower point of view would make a more interesting shot, If you can get low Denis
