Went to Lake Naivasha today and took this waterbuck. This is straight out of the camera with a light crop on image one as it filled about 2/3 of the frame and a tighter crop at 100% of original to get more of a portrait with the second.

Waterbucks will look at you and just as you are adjusting for the image, upon seeing you pointing something at them, they will casually look away and trot off.

I still think they have the most beautiful nose of all antelope! I will not bet, but this looks like a different sub-species than ours, John!

Will do some research. It always interest me how species adapt and vary slightly even on the same continent.

They have a shaggy brown-gray coat that emits a smelly, oily secretion thought to be for waterproofing. In East Africa, two types occur: the common waterbuck and the defassa waterbuck, distinguished only by the white pattern on the rump. The common waterbuck has a conspicuous white ring encircling a dark rump, while the defassa has wide white patches on either side of the rump.
Waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus); Common waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus ssp.ellipsiprymnus); Defassa waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus ssp. defassa)
So, yours is the defassa by the backside, it seems. Ours have the painted round target on they backsides! This one also appears more shaggy!

Always like learning!! Thanks for the information Callie. Considering most of the time these are gently trotting away, I should be able to get a decent view of their rear marking 🤣 Early outputs from the D850 are impressive. Great dynamic range and providing I can get the settings right, the images are so detailed.

Our story here is the white circle is caused by the toilet seat. Incidentally they taste terrible which is why there's so many.
