Do you want the apple pie or the blueberry pie?.....

They're both great photos Rollamok. If forced to choose I'd take the top one because I like the way the hummer stands out against the green grass behind it. But I really like the body and wing position in the lower photo. I think they both work well and either could print really well.

If I went with the top one I might crop a bit tighter to remove the dark background object on the left. And if I went with the lower one I might burn down some of that bright background on the right.

Dave said it!
Now, IF the hummer was NOT basically grey but a popping colour like some of his/hers cousins, the second image would be stronger. The eye is involuntary drawn to the brightest colour, thus #1 "wins" as the eye stops on the colour and in #2 it must pass the colour and get back to it, hence "loosing" the subject. Again, just my subjective gut-feel on these images.

Both are great. I'm jealous, I see about one hummingbird per year where we are at.

I like the first one. It connects the two elements in the photo as a unit. The second one has two competing components for attention. I ask "What is the focal point (for the viewer) here" The answer is the bird, but the flower is pulling me away creating a negative tension.
