Which one do you like and why

Two images of same subject made couple of years apart. Which one do you like and why ?

I think the first one could make a nice vertical format image, cropping away some of the left, and the 2nd could be a nice square format environment shot.

Neither. The first is, to me, overly tight. Over the last 10+yrs most of the images seem to have been tight portrait crops. That standard has become boring to me.

The second image is too loose and has a strange pink color cast.

I'd suggest cropping the second image and adjusting the color cast. However, in this case, the bird does not seem quite sharp.... Here's a try.....

I prefer the first, although I think it would be better if the bird was lower in the fame. It also look far too bright on my screen; to me it would look better if it was darker and less saturated.

From an artistic point of view I have to kindly disagree. In my opinion, the color cast is right, even though exaggerated, IF the picture was captured in early morning in winter. The tint should be a little more on the green side but still with a magenta cast. The shadow cast implies however late afternoon before sunset. In that case perfect WB is also slightly off and the color cast should be a little more on the yellow side. Either way, a slight magenta cast still works for me and gives the image a dreamy and calming look. For a look in the style of a documentary choose ButlerKids WB.

Concerning the crop (2nd pic), it depends what you want to achieve: animalscape (bird and landscape as equal subjects, your crop works) or pointing out the bird (Iike ButlerKid, but I prefer a slightly wider crop).

The 2nd image could be a tick darker, maybe -0.05, max -0.1 (LR value). Contrast and saturation is ok, if that‘s your style. I often prefer less contrast/saturation to give the image a more „airy“ look.

The 1st image is too bright, -0.1 to -0.15 (LR value) should do the trick. Also pull down the highlights on the background/bush. The subject placement is Good but the crop is too tight. The subject needs to „breathe“. If possible, add space evenly at all sides.

EDIT: Sorry, to answer your initial question… Both pictures are nice in their own way! I wouldn‘t prefer one over the other.

I prefer the 2nd one, by far! It shows more than only the subject and has a nice, layered composition with great colours. The top, blue shades complement well the colours on the bird, and they give some perspective, so for my part, I wouldn't crop.

The first one is also very nice, though, and it will please those who like to prefer the details of the bird to a more varied scene with a subject. So it depends on the public.

The first one just jumps out at the viewer. If that is your intent, then you nailed it. Might like it a little more is there was a little less negative space on the left, to maybe if the there was more space on the right. The second has midline horizon so I would cut out some of the brush. Nice shots.
