Which Sea Otter pic?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I can't decide which one I prefer so I thought I'd throw it open to the BCG wolves to comment. Constructive criticism welcome, too:

I'm probably going to discount Contestant No. 1 because the back end of the otter is cut off.

Thanks for looking.

I'd say the last is my favorite, but honestly, the lighting on these just ruins it for me. Any chance you could go back here on a cloudy day so the light is diffused? Also, the quality is not the best it could be, seems like the otters were far away.

Not for quite a while: It was a organized whale and sea otters watching trip and you don't get to choose the light, or even where the critters will show up. Plus, the boat was bobbing up and down continuously.

Which area was this? Definitely understand how hard it can be shooting from a boat. When whale watching, I had so many opportunities to get a great shot and missed 95% of them. And of course, the weather can change in an instant at sea.

North end of Vancouver Island. We had dense sea mist in the morning but it dispersed, leaving bright sunshine. Unfortunately, the latter prevailed for most of the day. I was hoping for some cloud cover, at least (it's the PNW in September), but there wasn't a cloud in the sky.

Number four, but slightly cropped in. Best because you can see both eyes and full body. Number five is similar, but four is better because there is a clean line of calm blue water above the otter's head, whereas five has the busier kelp-filled water directly behind.

They are all good especially under difficult lighting.
I am drawn to number 4. The expression, the eye contact, the placement of the subjects hands. In scanning through these, I keep stopping on this photo. I think it is my favorite.

Numbers 2 and 5 with 2 being my favorite. I prefer the composition and direct eye contact with both eyes. With hundreds of them in the files one eyed shots are an automatic delete for me unless there is something extraordinary happening in the shot. Purely personal preference of course.
