In 2000 White-headed were listed as Vulnerable in the Red Data Book. In 2015 their status was uplifted to Critically Endangered. There are now only an estimated 160 adult birds left in South Africa, and like all our vulture species, these numbers are dropping. (Source:projectvulture.org.za)

Excellent portrait beautifully taken, sadly all vultures seem to be under threat .
Problem for vultures is what they eat. If it's been shot with lead, if it's been poisoned, etc. In the US Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures are doing fine. California Condors would do just fine if it weren't for lead in bullets that kill a lot of what they eat. If hunters either used copper bullets or buried gut piles, the problem would be alleviated a great deal.

Maybe our most handsome vulture, and I count the BV too. Nice image, Oosty.
Some time since we could photograph one in Kruger

Beautiful image. What lens did you use?
Hi Ron - sorry to be so tardy but preoccupied with family issues. I shot this with an old copy of the Sigma 50-500mm non OS which my son bought for me used in September 2008. I've used the lens with my D70, D200 and now with the D7100. I have just bought a used 200-500 Nikkor and hope I get results as good - if not I'll keep the Sigma and sell the Nikkor :)
