Winter birds

Hi, I'd like to hear what you think of these photos. My intent is to capture winter as through the perspectives of song birds. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I really like the second image. The white frost on the out of focus background branches provides the feel of winter. There is a little frost on the branch left of the bird's feet. Overall you have a lot of bright elements in the background but they are not distracting - it just feels like winter. The bird is colorful - especially contrasting with the blue sky. And importantly, the execution of the bird is good.

If I had one wish I'd like the small thin branch just behind the bird to be removed. It goes through the head of the bird and is a distraction - but the overall framing and DOF reduce the adverse impact. It's probably too much to try to clone out the twig.

The chickadee in the first image is a bit dark and does not really have enough context to show a feel of winter. The angle of the perch is also a bit awkward. I like the catchlight and feather detail. You might try rotating the image. For a feeling of winter, I think it needs more space and maybe more ice or snow.

The second one…after the edit, especially…is really good. My only suggestion would be to lift the shadows around the eye JUST a smidge and very selectively…even then I’d have to see it to know if it made the image any better. Well done!

The edit (twig removal) is great. I love the palette of colors in the image.

As @EricBowles says, the first image seems a bit dark and the the cropping/angle throws me off a bit. Without the back 1/3 of the bird it feels a bit odd.
