Your suggestions please

I'm posting here given the nature of my post is geared towards Landscape

I have my D850 paired with the 150-600 Sigma C. I also have the 105mm f/2.8G Nikkor for macro/portrait

I am looking for feedback for suggested lenses for the following:
1. nightscape/milky way
2. landscape
The only needed criteria is that the lens(es) have 77mm filter threads. Third party lenses also welcomed.

I have been doing some research on 'best lenses' but am getting discouraged by reports of good at one end, poor at the other end, significant distortion/pincushion, significant vignetting, etc. I've tried seeing what other landscape photographers are using but unfortunately at this stage they are showing Z lenses or gear other than Nikon (ex. Sony, Fuji, Canon).

Thank you.

Thank you.
There will be as many opinions as photographers. I have used the Nikon 16-35 for landscape work and it does use a 77mm filter. If a lens uses a smaller filter than your 77mm set, you can always use an adapter ring as I have in the past. They are inexpensive, but get a decent brand rahter than the cheapest available. I have also use my Nikon 24-85 and 24-120 for such work. A decent 70-200 or70-300 and a decent 24-70 would give you wide coverage with your existing lenses. I personally prefer the Nikon lenses, but many other brands offer high quality glass at lower prices.
I use a Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 on my D850 for pure wide landscape work but often find myself with a zoom or even telephoto for many shots and panoramas. Others will weigh in too.
Also suggest you go to your local camera store and get some lenses in you hands to see what feels good to you. Also, do not shy away from the used market as many high quality F-mount lenses are coming available as people switch to mirrorless.

Yup, I'm looking particularly at the used market.

How did you like the 16-35mm through its full range?

And your 24-120mm? Superior to the 20-70mm re image quality?

I'm assuming you'll be targeting mostly untracked Milky Way shots (shooting from a tripod without a star tracker)? In that case, you want something that'll capture a lot of light, since you'll have to keep your exposures relatively short (to avoid star trailing).

Nikon's 20mm f/1.8 would be a good option there. Quite affordable (especially used), plenty light strong obviously and it'll take 77mm filters as well for normal landscape use.

20mm F/1.8 was my first thought also. I think moving forward a Z mount version will replace my F mount 14-24.

For Landscape my 24-70 get's the most use but it's 82mm filter thread

Thanks James and Ruley74.
Yes, tripod mounted, no tracker. As for the 24-70mm, I think the G version is 77mm thread. Any experience on IQ with that lens? Or is the 24-120mm better?

I have the z 14-24 f2.8 S
It’s a wonderful lens for landscape and astronomy. I have the Kase 112mm magnetic filters too…they attach to the special hood that you get with this lens, which can also be used with the z24-70/2.8 and the z70-200/2.8

Nice. I have the Kase 77mm filters and am trying to avoid purchasing another set of filters (I guess I could and then sell my existing ones) but it is a significant investment. Kase are good filters.

I can think of no instance where the 24-120 would be considered a better lens with respect to IQ than almost any version of the 24-70. The new Z mount version is considered the best of the 24-120's, but the Z mount 24-70 is still considered a better lens. The last F mount version of the 24-120 was considered the best in that mount, and it still had its critics.

Ken.... so to confirm, you are saying the F-mount 20-70mm has better IQ than the 24-120mm

Z lenses are out of the picture for me as my camera (D850) is F mount
The final answer will depend on the eyes of the person needing the image. I have seen fine images from the 24-120, but generally speaking, the 24-70 is a better lens. It is one stop faster, and many folks find the IQ to be better. It was a workhorse lens of photojournalists for many years. It was improved with each new version (as was the 24-120), and part part of Nikon's Trinity - 14-24, 24-70 and 70-210. I have the latter lens and it has served me well for many years. If you are thinking of using this lens for landscape work, I would read some good reviews and see how each lens performs in the corners, as I suspect that might be important to you. I like Thom Hogan's reviews. Some find him a bit grumpy, but I read past that. He knows his Nikon gear quite well, as do some others out there.

Good luck,

I use the already mentioned Nikon 20mm f1.8 lens with my D850 and are very happy with the results. I use this combination both in Landscape and Milky Way photography.

Fliters aside, the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 also delivers outstanding results on both of these genres of photography.

I think your post would have been better placed in the main section, which is mostly about gear. It would be great to have this section remain simply photos. I hope I don't offend you with this comment but I do read enough about gear in the main section.

I’d also suggest poster set a meaningful subject line too. “Your suggestions” tells us not a thing about the actual topic. ”Recommendations for Landscape lenses for Nikon z” and I’d not have even read it! Lol

Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 is the only lens you will need for night photos. This lens was suggested by a well know night photographer that you may have heard of, Brad Goldpaint. Check out his webpage and Youtube videos.

Z 14-24 S is my favourite
