Z6 III sensor readout rates for all stills and video modes

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I've published the Z6 III sensor readout rates for the full set of photo and video modes. The live table results can be viewed here, which are from my open/crowd source GitHub project:

Here are the results so you don't have to click through to see them:

  • 14-bit raw 1/69.39 (14.41ms)
  • DX area 14-bit raw 1/105.23 (9.50ms)
  • 12-bit JPEG/HEIF 1/90.62 (11.03ms)
  • C30,C60 JPEG 1/90.44 (11.05ms)

If you read through the references it is really interesting. The Z6iii sensor readout is a little more than 3 times faster than the Z6 or Z6ii. That is quite an improvement. The Z8 and Z9 sensor read out times are about 3.9 times faster than the Z6iii even though more pixels are being read. About what you would expect. The Z6iii is much less prone to rolling shutter effects than the previous Z6 and Z6ii but it is not as fast as the Z8 and Z9. As often happens, you trade off performance for price. Now we have another spot along that curve to choose from.

What does that tell you in practical terms about the electronic shutter having rolling shutter effect?
Rolling shutter is a function of both the sensor readout speed and the speed of the subject's movement within the frame. So it's really a continuum of possibilities - the slower the sensor readout, the more likely you'll see rolling shutter distortion, again as a function of the subject's speed.

That is cool data. If I'm reading it right it shows how remarkable the Z9, Z9, A1 are. And that the z6iii does pretty well compared to the similarly priced R6ii.
