Hi,

I would like opinions on a set-up that I'm thinking about. I mostly shoot birds with a Z6 along with a PF300 and a 1.4 TC. Rather than buying a PF500, I'm thinking of getting a 2.0 TC. I see that now Nikon makes a TC specifically for the Z system. My question is: Does it make a difference on whether or not that the TC is in front of the Z2F adapter or not. In other words, could I use a TC2.0Z, then the Z2F adapter, then the Lens? Would this work? And also, has anyone used a PF300 with a TC2.0 (my poor man's equivalent to a PF500)?

Thanks in advance and thanks to everyone for making this such a great forum.

That would work but I wouldn't expect the best image quality with that setup.

In terms of the FTZ adapter, it's basically the same as a macro extension tube with some electronics to handle the different lens AF systems but there's no optical elements in the adapter, it just establishes the proper spacing from the back of the F series lens to the camera's sensor. IOW, the F series lenses were designed to work with a DSLR that includes a mirror box assembly, when you remove that assembly and run a much thinner Z series camera you need to make up for that missing distance when using F series lenses and that's what the adapter does.

But IME, Nikon's TC-20 adapters really only work well with some of the very best big glass lenses like the 400mm f/2.8 or the 300mm f/2.8 and give pretty poor results with most other lenses. I wouldn't expect great image quality when running a TC-20 on your 300mm f/4 PF lens.

The Z-teleconverters are currently only compatible with the 70-200mm f/2.8 S (Z-mount lens) per Nikon site.
iskipped the 300PF and just bought the 500PF. Not cheap but quite good,

Thanks all for taking the time to answer my questions. I really wasn't aware that the new TC's would not work with the FTZ adapter. So that makes it pretty unanimous that I "need" the PF500. I just need to polish those "Oh honey -- I really need ..."
