Z600 6.3 PF Problem

Question for those with the Z600 6.3. I decided to take advantage of the Black Friday discount and ordered this from B&H and just received it. When I rotate the foot around the body of the lens it feels rough and there is a grinding noise. And there is some movement between the foot collar and the body of the lens. Is this normal?

My only frame of reference is my Z100-400 which is very smooth and quiet.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

On my 600 PF lens the collar rotation is smooth with virtually no sound at all. There is no movement of the collar other than rotation. The collar on my 70-200 lens behaves similarly.

Perhaps returning your lens for a replacement is in order.

Just check mine. Rotation is smooth, no noise & no play. I would send it back for a replacement.

Mine is definitely smooth and quiet, just like my Z 70-200. Sounds like there is a problem (grit got in there somehow?). BTW I bought mine used from this site, but it was in mint condition.

It's “chatter.” Very rare when parts of the hull are deformed. The caliber shouldn't fit through. No, it's not. The ring should go without sound or play. In your case, the lens should be replaced without regret.

Mine's smooth also. It is disappointing but you're doing the right by returning it. My 400 4.5 had a very 'loose' focus ring when I bought it. Lived with it for quite a while. Sent it to Nikon for repair, which they did under warranty. But was without the lens for quite a while. With B&H you could have the replacement within a week to 10 days.

A loose focus ring means that the collars are adjusted with a small tolerance, which is done on purpose so that the focus is not too tight. Why did you have it repaired? You wasted your money.

As I mentioned in my comment, it was repaired under warranty. Ive been buying Nikon lenses for 25 years. I'm pretty sure I know when a focus ring is too loose. As a matter of fact, Nikon agreed and repaired it.
