Z8 image viewing

My last couple outings I've run into this weird problem where when I hit the image view button nothing shows up on the LCD screen. The images appear in the viewfinder. If I pop out the screen they appear on the screen, pop the screen back into place and they disappear and back into the viewfinder. If I switch back and forth into different shooting modes it corrects and all is normal and the images appear on the LCD screen where I'm accustomed to seeing them. Anyone ever run into this? The fact that it goes back and forth has me concerned.

I think you may have inadvertently pressed the Monitor mode button and set it Prioritize viewfinder (2). That describes some of the behavior you're experiencing. Press it once and it then should be set to the default behavior, Automatic display switch.

I hope that's helpful.

Dammit man! Thank you. I've been doing google searches trying to figure this out and have come up blank. Yes, I'll bet I did press accidentally press that button.

I have Z8 set to Prioritize Viewfinder and do not have that issue. Unless I put the veiwfinder to my eye, the photo shows on the LCD regardless of its position. Perhaps some gunk is partially blocking the sensor?

Was it really cold out by chance? On my old D850's and my current Z8 the playback sometimes does not work if it is cold (it happened to me this morning in fact).

Not really all that cold, mid 40's and raining. I've had my camera mounted to my 500mm f4 with a LensCoat rain sleeve that fully covers the lens and body and I think it's possible to have hit the monitor button while fiddling with the sleeve.

After playing around with the camera and the rain sleeve I'm convinced that it was the sleeve causing the issue. The eye sensor is very sensitive and just shading it a little is all it takes. I didn't even have to cover the sensor, all it took was the fabric shading the sensor.
Wow, mystery solved.
Thanks everyone for your input and helping with this crazy "problem"

I’m glad you found the reason for the problem!

I seem to recall that Steve covered this problem or one very similar to it in his most recent video about 12 fixes to occasional Z8/9 problems. It contains quite a few suggestions and fixes for problems like this. You might want to check it out.
