Z9 and iPhone 11 in Upper Antelope Canyon

My wife and I recently visited various National Parks in Utah, USA including the Upper Antelope Canyon. While in the Canyon floor, I was using Nikon Z9 with 14-24mm F mount lens attached. My wife was using her iPhone 11. Surprisingly in many circumstances within the Canyon, iPhone produced lovely photos if not better than my combo. Here are two photos capturing very much the same scene: the first one is from iPhone and the second one is from Z9. One disadvantage I noticed with Z9 is that it lost the GPS connection soon after entering the canyon whereas iPhone maintained it throughout. I initially forgot to lower my shutter speed as we moved deeper into the canyon; however, even at 10,000 ISO Z9 did produce a beautiful image for this particular scene. Our Navajo guide sometimes used her iPhone to capture a few images and those are stellar, the guide knew where to point the camera (image 3 below). Next time you are there, ask the guide to take a photo or two using your cell phone, you will be pleasantly surprised by the result.

Nice report. I know they clamped down on the photo tours (with tripods) due to crowds, but it looks like you can get good images hand-held on a regular tour.
Yeah, hand-holding is the only way to go. Besides the tripods, handbags, no matter how small it is, are allowed. Plus, the constant pressure of another group following close will force one to move along.

Really interesting series. just shows how it is not the equipment in the hand, it is the equipment between the ears deciding how to point the camera. We were in the lower canyons quite a while ago - fascinating place.
