For shooting video of birds in flight, should I be using AF-F or AF-C? If using AF-F, do you also actively focus with back button as in shooting stills? Thanks

Like many things, it depends on the situation, but in general, I use AF-F if birds are not too erratic. AF-C will track focus as long as you have the shutter button or AF-ON activated (or any custom button setting that includes AF-ON). If you release the button, AF-C will not track, focus stays where it was when the button was released. Repressing the Shutter button will attempt to reacquire focus on whatever is in your focus area. AF-F continues to track the subject that the system has identified as long as it can...and as long as you can keep it in or in some cases, near, whatever AF window you've selected.

Be advised that when using either AF-C or AF-F, there are two settings that it's important you understand and adjust to your situation. These are items G6 and G7 in Custom Settings for Video for each of your Custom Settings banks. Check pages 712 and 713 in the Reference Guide to understand the function of each. The short version, G6 determines lens focus speed once the camera decides it needs to refocus. The G7 setting determines how quickly (delay time) the camera will try to refocus if it loses focus. Try different settings and see what you like...and practice, practice, practice. There is no one setting that will cover all bases.

Cheers!
