Are there any "serious", credible tests comparing lossless compressed and HE* out there?

A random thing that might be interesting would be to capture the same scene that has a lot of dynamic range, then import to LR with the NR zeroed out, then export to jpg and compare the file sizes of the resultant jpgs.

There are probably vagaries in this approach, but i suspect the size will give you some idea about the amount of information retained in the image.

be interesting to try that with lossless compressed vs he* vs he vs fine jpg.

heck, might be interesting to see what the difference is between the out of camera fine jpg vs importing and exporting that same jpg

Stills photography will always have a place, just that video will get more popular with mirrorless & it has. Instagram is the best proxy barometer...but it will truly take off when Instagram improves its video compression...currently, it is terrible...once that gets better more people will get on board...

Interesting
Yes i agree, I feel the younger generation are doing so well with their I phones and video etc, i used to see a mum and dad on the beach or in the park taking pictures of their child running around now its all video on their smart phones, something live it seems is more memorable and enjoyable to see as its has movement and sound atteched tio a magic moment, its like reading a review and looking at a photo, i cant stand it, i prefer to watch and listen to a clip.

My local Camera House says that the majority of buyers in the younger age group when asking about cameras they say, oh yes i know it dose stills but what about the video.

I think we are on a journey of change and entering fully the third generation of the internet, the internet as i said last year is having more video clips in place of text and stills as we know it..

The adult generation of today grew up with a phone in their hands now the phone is a mini lap top, and high end camera, a credit card, a wallet, a filing cabinet a photo and video album, a Covid scanner and tracking device, a passport soon to be, a tracking or directional finding GPS device all in one and in the palm of you hand.

The Camera manufacturers as we know them are now in a technology war or storm, each a s a standalone will find it hard to survive against the likes of Apple and Samsung in this rapidly changing world, the camera companies need to consolidate as one while working separately to keep up.

The world is about the big getting bigger and the small getting out or left behind.

Innovative Technology is great if used wisely................its the master at creating change with often addiction or dependency, sadly it all comes at a cost.

To the original point, i feel stills will have a place but a progressively smaller place, the way stills were captured in the past will be long forgotten and be very different in the coming decades.

NEW Canon EOS R5 C Mirrorless Cinema Camera

And they say still photography as we know it is not becoming obsolete.................as it will all come from Video in the very near future..........

Admittedly, I haven't looked at the R5C, but I thought there were reasons that video wasn't just 24 or 30 or 60 or 120 stills stitched together and that pulling frames from video typically isn't nearly as good as a still image.

I’m using CaptureOne and the files seem fine there. I’m happy with what I’m seeing, similar to Z7ii but cleaner noise (my impressions, not testing or direct comparisons). There were other mentions of Adobe not working the best at this time.
Great to hear C1 is doing ok with the files... i was planning to download the trial and give it a go and by the end hoping DXO has released the update for Z9.

Curiously, what is the NR like on C1?

It's fairly decent now, but I wouldn't say as good as something like Topaz Denoise. It wasn't the best when I first began using it after switching from LR6.

Panasonic is working hard at this, they promote 30mb files from video, this will all only get better and become the norm if technology development history is anything to go by.

The internet, Tik Tok etc and web site building sector, advertising demand, is the driving force that will see technical development accelerate going forward.
The 3 amigo's Nikon Canon Sony are positioning them selves as a collective force by embracing change, adapting for survival, as Apple and Samsung just rule the masses in this area.

Video killed the radio star, Video will kill the still photographic star.......the future is going to be excitingly different.

Can others confirm, the new charger with the Z9 makes a very quiet clicking sound when idle? I have since unplugged, just would like to confirm if it's normal.
Super annoying. I have two and they both make the sound. I thought maybe it was a fan inside. In the USA and using the provided power supplies, not another form of USB power.

I checked it out. Does not make any noise. I am in india. Wonder if supply voltage makes a difference.
Hello Kumar ,

Did you get a battery charger with your Z9 in India? I didn't get any with mine only a USB c charger which directly charges the battery when it's in the body. Nikon says the BIS standard approval couldn't come for the charger

I'm also noticing some odd behaviour in LR. As far as I know Z9 support was added awhile back and only claimed to be "preliminary". I actually have access to the Prerelease program for LR so I'm way ahead of the regular release and I can't recall any notes in the release notes that said full Z9 support yet....although I may have missed it as I get new releases fairly regularly and often don't check the release notes.

The jpeg previews I see in LR before entering Develop module are looking much nicer than what LR is pulling off. I find that my normal sharpening and NR defaults that I've been using for every camera for years are not working well on the Z9 but I don't know why that is?? Maybe just because I've had to shoot very high ISO during my first 3 days testing. I'll reserve further judgement till I shoot in good light this weekend.

Thanks a lot its useful and assuring to know that others are also facing this

No I did not. It is the usb charger. I probably misunderstood the question raised by Darwin. Did not realize that he was referring to the external charger.

Just came across a really cool feature in the Z9. Not sure if it's specific to the Z9 though (it's my only mirrorless camera).

I use back-button focus. While holding the AF-ON button in AF-C mode, when I turn the focus ring (50 1.2) it displays focus peaking. Very cool. I didn't think I could see focus peaking unless I was in MF.

What's the general impression of the Z9 auto focus tracking (eye in particular) vs the Sony A1? Not trying to flame, or start anything. I'm waiting on my unit to ship. Jst curious if the system is operating better than some of the comparison videos I've watched where it still seemed to be struggling a bit.

probably the most realistic answer you'll get at this point is the a1, r3 and z9 are in the same ballpark

I feel Jarrod Polan is open honest accurate and correct in the following link, it goes on for a while but is concise and interesting.
Now as Z9 owner that i am, and a very happy one. i know Nikon will progressively move forward.

I have always said, I am Nikon, yes for image file quality.........
If i Changed brand in 35mm it would only be to Canon..........
Personally i do not like Sony as a company unless i got my gear for free. I do like their gear, not their files.

This is not a my ego is better bigger than yours, this is simply the way i feel...........Sony has done a lot to shake up the industry and they make ground breaking good gear.

Again i am happy with the Z9 for what i need and do.
I think Jarrod's straight up gutsy call it as you want clip is fair and reasonable.
I have no complaints about et Z9, i do feel that Nikon could have built in two processors like Sony not just one, its a bit like the European sports cars, they have a two stage Turbo that just delivers consistent power evenly through the full rev range, start to finish..
I find even as a happy Z9 owner and lover i respect where Sony and Canon are at and especially where they will be with their next release, the gap will widen significantly between the three in 2022/23 .........
