These are really interesting plants. Frequently confused with fungi but these are indeed plants. They lack chlorophyl which gives them their ghostly appearance. They are not really rare and have quite a wide range. However they are not frequently seen. They live in deep woods with almost total shade. Around here in Ohio and Kentucky they like beech forests.
