Nikon Z9 - Firmware 5.0

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

the version probably has more to do with how nikon internally manages their software development than a strict indication of "how much" stuff is in it
Internal procedures, they should note with different version on their own internal Jira board.
For us, seeing a V5 gave us all false expectations about something NEW! which I am expressing. And there’s nothing wrong. We enjoy every new update.
Thank you Nikon 🙏

Something to keep in mind immediately following the update.

“Note: The shooting modes in all shooting banks “A” through “D” are set to P right after the firmware is updated.”
…..So are other settings being scrambled in the shooting banks? I’ve got my Z9 sorted the way I want it and it sounds like 5.0 is flipping the table..🧐

The tutorial video from Nikon France - above #22 - makes it clear the engineers have updated major aspects in FW 5.00 for the Z9 at Paris Olympics - Auto Capture, the ftp Transfer and networking, splitting the Photo and Video Banks.... Improved file features aimed mostly at jpgs, but also more options for Noise Reduction at high ISOs.

True to form, Nikon continues to design its flagship cameras for Sports professionals

One Z9 lost the names of the Photo shooting and Custom banks (fields were blank) after update; although strangely the Video Banks had inherited the names "Wildlife, Macro, Action" etc from the Photo Banks?!
Bizarre but the other Z9 kept these bank names intact through the update.
Fortunately, as far as I can see the settings in these banks of both cameras have survived (I set them up identically).
And as noted previously, the Shooting mode in each Photo was reset to P

There is the following note about a GNSS Module Firmware Update…

“Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module’s firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made.”

1) How do you check the version of GNSS module firmware?
2) The note refers to a second update. Does that mean the update has to be done twice?

the instructions are hidden within the download page. The gpss version is listed next to G in the firmware submenu:Setup

GNSS Module Firmware Update

Following the update of Z 9 firmware “C” (performed with the first update), the GNSS module firmware will be updated with the second update. To perform the second update, follow Steps 3, 4, and 5 in “Updating the Camera Firmware”.

Note: The second update is not necessary if the GNSS module’s firmware “G” is already 0.17, as with which version, the improvement has already been made.

This was answered hours ago. Thank you, though.

I’m not surprised that Sports photographers see elements of the new firmware as meant for them. The upcoming Olympics will get enormous global attention and Nikon wants professionals who use the Z9 to have the best capabilities and performance it can provide. It’s all good as far as I’m concerned.

This looks to be a complicated upgrade and I am waiting to get some guidance and recommendations before I start bumbling around with menu setting changes.

See the instructions on Download page, link above. The most important factors are to have a fully charged battery; don't switch off the camera until the Prompt appears.

Then check the Firmware submenu to confirm the current version is now 5.0.

Repeat the update for the GPSS fw only if it says v0.7

No kidding. Thankfully, much of this update is already written for the Z8, I just have to make a few adjustments to those sections and then I'm only left with the actual Z9 only stuff. I tell ya, a guy could go broke doing free updates...
Steve,
You've made yourself so indispensable you'll never go broke 👍👍

Glad to see the new firmware added the ability to cycle through AF Areas. I have liked that on my Z8. Of course, there are other things I had hoped for that aren't included. One interesting thing -- while they did not add Raw Pre-Capture (in any form), there is a small improvement. You can now use jpeg fine for C15 through C120 instead of being limited to jpeg normal only.
