A little more information ...

Sydney – 15 May 2024:

Canon Inc. announced today that it is currently developing the EOS R1, a full frame mirrorless camera, as the flagship model for the EOS R system equipped with an RF mount and is aiming for a 2024 release.

The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera geared toward professionals that brings together Canon’s cutting-edge technology and combines top-class performance with the strong durability and high reliability sought in a flagship model. This camera will dramatically improve the performance of both still images and video and meet the high requirements of professionals on the frontlines of a wide range of fields including sports, news reporting, and video production.

This camera employs the newly developed image processor DIGIC Accelerator in addition to the pre-existing processor DIGIC X. The new image processing system, composed of these processors and a new CMOS sensor, enables a large volume of data to be processed at high speeds and delivers incredible advancements in auto focus and other functions.

By combining the new image processing system and deep learning technology to an advanced degree, Canon has achieved high-speed and high-accuracy subject recognition. For example, subject tracking accuracy has been improved so that in team sporting events where multiple subjects intersect, the target subject can continually be tracked even if another player passes directly in front of them.

In addition, the AF “Action Priority” function recognises subject movement by rapidly analysing the subject’s status. In moments during a sports game when it is difficult to predict what will happen next, this function automatically determines the player performing a certain action, such as shooting a ball, as the main subject and instantly shifts the AF frame, thereby helping to capture decisive moments of gameplay.

The combination of the new image processing system and deep learning technology will help to improve image quality. Canon implements the image noise reduction function, which has been previously developed and improved as part of the software for PCs, as a camera function to further improve image quality and contribute to user creativity.

Canon is working on field tests for this camera, and will support capturing definitive and impactful moments at international sporting events to be held in the future.

Executive summary of the announcement:
  1. Hold on photographers, don't jump the ship !
  2. We might/will have something coming !
  3. It's bigly advanced !
  4. Save your money for a Canon R1 !
  5. With any luck you mere mortals will snag one perhaps in 2025 !

I am just curious where Canon cripple hammer will strike this time.

+1

Unless this camera incorporates a major shift in technology, Canon's announcement reminds me of the VW television ads 50-ish years ago when an automatic transmission first became available in the Beetle: "Volkswagen takes a giant leap into the present!!"

They are "aiming" to have this out in "2024"?....good grief....they can't even set a date for the thing yet?....they can't even confirm some of the basic specs like sensor resolution?.....the second this camera is released the competition will be ready to release their MkII versions (A1, Z9) and Canon will be 4 years behind once again.

What a joke of an "announcement".

A low MP sports camera ain’t gonna cut it for the flagship these days. They should have learned that by now with the R1 mark I, which they called the R3. Rumors are this is only 30MP.

my reading between the lines is maybe they have a dedicated chip for subject detection, which indeed might give them an edge

also, my read between the lines is they are going to use the data stream/pipeline approach like nikon
Yes it does read like there is a dedicated AI chip alongside the DigicX. But Sony already has had this since the A7RV so don't see what type of edge it will give them??

I've seen rumours that it was developed as a 30MP sensor but they had pushback along the way from Explorers etc and maybe had to go back and develop a higher MP sensor and that is what has delayed the camera so much. Who knows??

🤞🏼 If we waited all this time for another low MP sports camera with nothing they couldn’t have done 4 years ago, I’m going to buy Sony and Nikon stock.

Is this an AI chip? They call it an "accelerator" and I figured this had more to do with AF processing and perhaps pre-capture? It is doubtful that they are releasing a 24-30 MP flagship body. Purportedly the R3 is staying and has an established market.

A subset of Computer Vision, Human Action Recognition (HAR) of athletes is an active research arena in computer science, for the broadcasting and media industry as well as for coaching sports. In the wider sphere, it has applications in the military and security etc.

It will be interesting how Canon's have implemented this feature as they tease it in the marketing speak....

R&D labs in the leading camera companies have probably invested in priority research in this arena over the past few + years....this includes rich image libraries for training refined Deep learning algorithms on dedicated hardware etc

Forget about this R1 is what I'd say. It looks to be as huge, and probably just as heavy, as the Nikon Z9.

The R5II is thé body the majority of Canon users should be looking out for.
Jan Wegener has a rumor video on the coming R5II, stating that it will have a very fast 45mp stacked sensor, and pre-focus..
This should bring the R5II on par with the Nikon and Sony stacked sensor cameras.
Having heard about how well the non-stacked sensor R5 performs, it should equal the playing field.

The R1 is just a traditional (read: old-fashioned) prestige project for the pro photographers that want a big and heavy camera with integrated vertical grip, military level durability and infinite batterly life.

Man, for whatever reasons there are some serious canon bashers on this site. Let me say it is not appealing in any way. Why not see what it is before starting in with the brand bashing?
I'd argue there's a lack of brand fanatics here on this site, which is pleasant and unlike other forums. If you want to toe the company line there are plenty of places to do that on the internet. Too many, perhaps.

About 20+ years ago, university researchers put an internet-connected camera into a breakroom and tracked people entering. Their goal was to predict whether a person would go to the refrigerator or coffee pot first based on how they came through the door.

Glad to see this is finally paying off.

I used Canon for like 20 years, man. I don't bash them as a brand. But this "announcement" is a joke. They'd have been better off holding off saying anything until and unless they could release some technical details.

Fixed that for ya.
Thank you, it needed fixing.

You caught me on still carrying some resentment towards Nikon for bringing the Z8 so late, first milking the Z9 sales. It instilled a personal grudge against big heavy pro bodies.
It led to a switch to Sony that is still a bit bittersweet, as I was a fervent Nikon shooter with the D500+500PF, and would love to own a Z800PF (and probably will by the end of this year with a Z8).
But unlike Nikon, Canon will have the portable and reasonably sized R5II out so they cannot be accused of "forcing" this type of body on their users.
