L Bracket for Nikon Z8

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I've used ProMediaGear universal L-brackets, and I'm very happy with them. Well built, and the ones I've used have screws you can loosen and remove the L part if you want more compact, or to slide the L part out for easier access to the ports.

The only downside is they (were?) using a proprietary QR, not the widely used Magpul QR, but I think they're phasing that out in favor of the latter.

The Z8 is so new there are no dedicated L Brackets yet. SmallRig is taking preorders on a cage, but I don't want that I just want a bottom and side bracket for still shooting. There are a couple universal L Brackets on Amazon (generic to fit any model), such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X46YKQZ/?tag=backcogaller-20
Does anyone have experience using universal brackets like this?
The SmallRig cage for the Z9 is garbage. Thin metal all around. It's fine for mounting a small accessory on, but I wouldn't trust it to protect the body or hold the camera and heavy lens on a tripod. I'd wait for the RRS.

I use small rig on my z9 and other z bodies. They are a) available first; b) cheap; and c) work great. And stiff enough for my use - so not garbage at all
Since NR posted am image of a small rig L-bracket I expect they will be for sale soon. No one else is making a Z8 version — but of course you can use a general plate but it probably will cover something like the battery

The general rule for lenses are if it has a tripod foot, you should support it there.

The small rig l bracket at least (I don't have a full cage) isn't meant for protection either. It does hold the camera fine, but I have a decent tripod and head.

For interior architecture photos, rotating the camera horizontally and vertically is useful. Obviously, I will be with 14-24, not a big tele lens.

Besides the Promedia gear, is there a general bottom plate that works well across a number of cameras. I view this as a stop gap measure until custom designed L brackets are made available.

I used universal L-brackets on my Canons for years until I switched to MFT and still have a Canon with one. They're well built and have never given me any problems; the only thing I don't like about them is that they have to be removed to change batteries (that's a pain). I use third -party grips on my Olympus cameras too. I wouldn't consider purchasing a name brand L-bracket or grip for multiples of the price of third-party units for no apparent benefit.

I'm waiting for the SmallRig L-bracket. I think there's an image of it on Nikon Rumors, but no actual link / listing yet. IMO they make the best brackets / cages out there, certainly for the money.

Considering how popular the Z8 is going to be, I would imagine Really Right Stuff and Kirk Enterprises will come out with one in the near future. Maybe Pro Media Gear also (whom I just discovered and MikeJ mentioned above).

I find that the major companies are slow to make brackets and plates. First they need to get hold of the camera/lens and then measure it. Next design a product, even if it is somewhat standard. And then finally produce it. Not sure why it takes so long, though I have heard from RRS that there are production bottle necks.

Kirk maybe in 3-6 months but it will take RRS at least 12 months if the stay with their normal we will not be rushed cycle of product development -- I love their stuff when one finally can. So in the short term Small rig it is or just a simple plate for now -- it is not like I will be shooting the Z8 in portrait orientation with those Z9 getting dusty in a cupboard AND I want easy access to the ports on the side for some time.

I think Ricci is using a 3 Legged Thing in his video.
I bought the 3 Legged Thing Universal L-bracket for use with my D500 and was shocked to find that it did not have the stop pins in the portrait direction. I replaced it with a Sunwayfoto Universal L-bracket and have been happy with it. As someone else mentioned, the universal brackets block access to some ports, so you need to remove the bracket to change batteries, etc. But, other than that, they are fit for purpose. FWIW
