Nikon 200-600 Interest?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

To follow up to my original post now that we have an officially announced lens, it looks to be a winner, even if only marginally better IQ than the 200-500 and equal to or better than th Sony 200-600. Great price, great ergos, especially with internal zoom elements. That said, I don't see myself buying this lens, given what I already have. Nikon will sell boatloads of the lens and rightly so.

Now the new 70-180 f2.8, yeah, that has my interest...I still have my 70-200 E FL and I'm thinking I'll sell that and pick up the 70-180 if it pans out. I like the size and the price is right...especially if I can catch it on sale.

Cheers!

not trying to take anything away from the 70-180, but the 70-200 E/FL is one of the best 70-200s ever made. i’d really consider if moving to the 70-180 is beneficial

Wanna buy it? :) It is an amazing lens and works wonderfully for stills...but I'm shooting more and more video. The AF and VR on the F-mount lenses is nowhere near as smooth and quiet as the Z lenses and new features like Auto Capture don't work with the F-mount lenses. I can give up some sharpness in the interest of smoother focusing and usability for video. I'll wait and see how the reports on that lens turn out, though. Matt Irwin's initial impression is pretty positive, but I'll need to lay hands on one somewhere.

70-180 F2.8

I think nearly all the new Nikon glass offers one of or some off the following features being, lighter quieter wider shorter sharper, less CA etc etc and that's a great thing especially for video and still photographers as well. Prices seem good on this lens, but with the external extension and its design i wonder if its made by Tameron ? The price certainly fits the label.

Time will tell how good it is compared to the pro level 70-200 2.8 S or FL

The new Nikon lens designs are mostly prioritizing for Video application, even the 14-24 is designed to accommodate/prioritize for video needs.

Long and heavy is not suitable for video as we know, shorter wider quieter light suits video for a host of reasons.........yes it a bonus for stills photography, however video is the end game.

Interesting remake of a old lens.

180-600 sounds and looks interesting as is the price, real world coal face use of both these lenses will be defining.

Deal Breaker

My self i prefer the 200-500 as its a F5.6, partly, but because i use my lens as a push pull, super fast zoom in and out, i can frame tightly or fully the erratically moving subject at instant constant pace while holding the hammer down, brilliant, i can t do this with the 180-600, that's a absolute deal breaker for me, only because of the way i use the tool and get the results, that's a feature i don't want to give up at any cost.

Only an opinion

i think nikon is smart to leverage the 3rd party to fill in segments of its lineup as well as licensing 3rd party lenses
Yes it certainly makes commercial sense, its also cheaper to consolidate production facility's, still pick up margin, it also allows for versatility, setting up production for a new item is not cheap and unless you have the volume, its better to outsource with some one like Tamron.

Also Tamron has in their lenses IS that is far better than what Nikon traditionally had, check out the 70-200 comparisons Tamron Sigma Nikon.

Hey as long as its reflected in the price that benefits the user.

Top end assembled by Nikon (supposedly) with globally outsourced manufactured components. (is this a transition phase)

Mid point to Tamron (is this a transition phase)

Low end to China. (is this a transition and security phase)

It could also all be a transitioning phase as Nikon is moving fully into the USA for their global head quarters and maybe full manufacturing ?, maybe Nikon is being fully reinvented from the ground floor up. I mean they have moved out and closed down so to speak most operations in Japan and possibly soon Asia, so the question really is will they really go back to cradle to the grave manufacturing.

Toyota Ford Tesla all have been invited to set up in America by Biden's invitation, i think many more blue chip global companies will move as well.

Only an assumption
