Thanks Bruce, These guys are large birds with beautiful markings, very well camouflaged for the marsh reeds.

I have used a D3 and D850 to photograph American bitterns with moderate success. They are very slow moving but usually in the reeds as with your images. Having eye detect autofocus makes an enormous difference which cannot be overstated.
 
Impressive well done series. Congratulation! Did you id the small snake?
 
Here are some shots I got of a bittern last week here in Greenville, SC. The one(s) here tend to be bolder and will come out in the open and stay there.
Shot with a Canon R7/RF100-500--ISO was12800 (!).
