That is fantastic! I chased Monarch's for almost 2 hours today and never got a shot. Hyper buggers!

That's where that 500 PF really can make a difference, you are further away and they give you that split second for you to do your magic. Great detail!
 
Thank you, Andrew. Yes, the 300mm PF I have is a nice close-up lens for larger subjects (even smaller ones if you don't mind cropping a lot). I've considered the 500mm PF, but the minimum focusing distance is twice that of the 300mm (3.0 m vs 1.4 m) with less magnification (0.18x vs 0.24x). I wouldn't mind having a 500mm PF, though. :) I'm trying out the 300mm PF with a TC-14E iii that I just purchased used, and it appears that combination is quite sharp. Keeps the minimum focusing distance, too.

Alan, just curious. Are you shooting the butterflies handheld/VR or with a support?
