500mm PF shoulder strap and tripod mount

I replaced the Nikon foot with one from Kirk. Then I put the Peak Design plate on the top side of the foot. The foot can go on the tripod without the need to remove the Peak Design plate. I attach one end of my slide strap to this plate and the other to the strap ring on left side of the camera.View attachment 7410
Same here with a “hejnar” foot. Works great for me.

Think I put this on a similar thread a while back.

This is the 500mm PF with the Kirk foot which has a QD socket and a Magpul MS4 QD swivel attached to a Black Rapid strap, been using it for a good while now and it works well (y)

No need to make it more complicated. I use the Kirk SS-1 Security Strap for any time I need to have a lens supported by a strap. I use the Kirk strap with its Arca-Swiss clamp primarily with my 600mm f/4 lens that with a camera attached weighs over 11 lbs and this puts the load on the padded stap and then I can carry the in one hand. Much easier on the body than carrying the tripod with the camera and lens on one shoulder. I remove the lens foot with its Arca-Swiss adapter plate from the tripod head and attach the Kirk strap and vice versa when putting the lens back onto the tripod head.

With the 500mm PF lens I carry it either in a backpack or in my hand as the weight is no greater than having a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens mounted on a camera. The camera straps are strong enough to support the weight when I need my hands free as when replacing a battery.

I use detachable straps which I started doing when using underwater housings for photography with my SLR cameras. I found these straps work equally well to get rid of the strap while the camera and a heavy lens are mounted on a tripod. More than once I have caught myself on a camera strap and nearly sent an expensive lens and camera crashing to the ground. Some, as with the old Tamrac now discontinued and the current Op/Tech ones will not accidentally detach when only one side of the latching mechanism is pushed in.

A camera strap for me is a third hand and is invaluable when changing lenses or adding or removing a teleconverter or a filter. Using a detachable strap provides the best overall solution. Using the mounting hole on the base of the camera interferes with attaching a camera plate or L bracket or even a transmitter for triggering a remote flash. With the standard camera strap the camera can be slung over a shoulder and brought up quickly or over my lower back where it does not bounce around regardless of the terrain. The strap attachments to the base of the camera results in the camera and lens flopping around and this is never a good thing.

On my blackrapid strap I have a QR clamp attached via the screw in attachment (not sure what it is called). You could easily attach a peak design to the clamp.

I don't use a strap with my 500PF. Instead I use one of these shoulder bags.

https://www.thinktankphoto.com/collections/vision-shoulder-bag-series/products/vision-15

Its a perfect fit for a 500PF and the bag has straps underneath to attach your tripod / monopod. I use a monopod with my 500PF so this bag is ideal to carry and its easy to open the lid and pick up the camera ready to use.
Looks like a nice solution to carry my D500/500PF combo in a more stylish way. I assume that the body and attached lens will be placed on its side and that the lens foot will not have to be rotated? Is there still some place for storing small items like a cleaning kit? Do you have a picture of your camera and 500 PF in this bag? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi @JaapL

Attached are some photos of my bag with the Nikon Z 7, FTZ, and 500mmPF lens.

External view with monopod attached underneath the bag with the provided straps.

I normally have the foot to the side as this is how I attach to my monopod. There is room to include a teleconverter attached as well. There is a small accessory pocket in the front which would hold batteries etc but not a lens. I sometimes put a small towel on top of the 500mm and then a small second lens on top.

You can place the camera base down but it is a bit of tight fit.

Here is my KFConcept backpack carrying a D-500/pf500, the 26" walkstool and a Sirui monopod/monogimble. The D-500/500pf sits in the backpack with the hood properly attached. (I carried a d-720/Sigma 150-600C also this way). On the lens foot you can see a nylon tietie where we attached the sling to the foot. (Our plan is to attach a split ring to the foot with two tie-ties but we are still experimenting.

The sling has to be installed first. Then the backpack with the sling outside the waist strap and neck strap.

I attach my peak design strap to the side attachment tand the peak design plate on the bottom of the camera which allows the lens foot to be used for tripod mounting if required.
This allows the camera and lens to hang vertically down which I find reduces swing when hiking.
My concern is that we are told to connect to the lens foot to avoid stress on the camera mounting. However as the lens only weighs 1.5kg a d the camera 1kg I don't think this is an issue but would welcome other people's thoughts View attachment 6750
Hi, I use the same method with my D500/ 300-f4-pf + 1.4tc with no problem. I have a 500 -pf on order, and it being delivered in a week or so (I hope!). I would like to use the same set up with the D500 and 500pf if possible. I always shoot hand-held. Have you had any problems with your set up as illustrated above, or had any other people's thoughts? Thanks, Richard

Update on the photograph of the backpack.

We have found that the Sirui P-326 monopod to be short enough collapsed that it can be stowed in the laptop compartment. The monogimble sticks out of the top of the pack if it is attached but it is an easier quickdraw.

Since I was also worried that the monogimble would unscrew from the tripod I felt like I needed a safety clip when the tripod/monogimble was attached to the side. In the laptop compartment I have no such worries. I also decided to not use the monopod as a hiking stick although it is advertised as such.

Given the incredible light weight (14.1oz) and the 6 section construction that allows the 15.75" closed to telescope to 61" I am worried that the unit will not take the shock of being used as a hiking stick so I will carry a standard hiking pole on the side.

After reading in detail about how the 500pf is constructed and balanced with most of the weight near the camera, I think the moment associated with suspending with a strap attached to the camera not likely to cause a problem.

I had exactly the same set up as you before ie D500 and 300 PF before I moved onto the D850 and 500PF and have never had a problem with either using the camera as a connection point. I like the set up. I do a lot of hiking and I find the camera does not swing so much.

I’ve found you can JUST squeeze the 500PF into the Thinktank digital holster V50 (if you unzip the extension, it will go in with the hood in place, ready to shoot). I wear this on a speed belt with an added padded shoulder strap and find that’s fine for hiking all day and also easily accessible.

A Kirk. Replacement foot and magpul QD with a strap of your choice is the neatest solution.
That might be a good way to go, I'll have to try that with my Peak Design strap.
