Amazing dynamic range

Ordinary colour negative film had a range without dodging or burning of at least 12 stops dynamic range.

Perhaps more important with colour negative film; highlight detail while not necessarily colour accurate did not burn out with over exposure.
Colour negative film could handle up to about five stops over exposure while retaining "reasonable" images information.
This made colour film extremely suitable for recording the flames behind a rocket as it took off.
