We took this photo while traveling through southern Utah and Arizona
Curious as to whether you took the picture with a DSLR, Mirror or IPhone? Never been there, but 3-4 friends have been and they more than encouraged me to use IPhone because of dust. Told me specifically not to change lenses in canyon and do not use a zoom unless it is an internal zoom. Your thoughts as we are heading for AZ in two weeks and hope to go there. Thanks!

Cool photo of a cool place. In response to the question about dust…I’ve been there and it isn’t as dusty as you might think. I would not do a whole lot of lens swaps but it’s really fairly minimal. One thing you don’t really get from photos there is how small and narrow it is…it looks huge in most photos but that’s because of relatively wide lenses mostly. In most places, the walls are 6-8 feet apart and you don’t get that. Both upper and lower are also tremenyo er rowded…there used to be dedicated higher dollar photo tours where you were escorted back and forth through the crowd to get to the sunbeam spots at the right time…then they would let you setup tripods and get ready before blocking the throngs for 2 minutes while you got the people free shots…with those tours being dead now…most shots likely look like the subway platform at rush hour…wall to wall people. I used a DSLR and a zoom lens and had no issues with dust. But today…I would consider some of the lesser known and unpopulated by tourists slots myself. Ypu can still get people free shots…but ypu have to look upward towards the top to get the people out of frame. I was there shortly after the Nat Gro cover photo of lower (I think, the one you have to climb down to get into anyway)…and I got a pretty similar photo looking back towards the entrance as the cover one…only I didn’t get paid $25K for mine.

Thank you! What would you recommend for a wide angle lens? I have a 16-80 on my D500 and haven’t bought a wide angle for the Z8 I just purchased.

If I was taking only a single lens I would take my 14-30 because that gives 45 in DX mode as well…and most of my shots were at fairly short focal lengths because as I said it isn’t nearly as big as most pictures make you think it is…6-8 feet wide is average, maybe 10-12 ma and many places where you can touch both walls. Shoot at f5.6 or so and use hyper focal distance so pretty much everything is in focus, 1/125 or so and the ISOs were in the 400-1000 range mostly IIRC. I used an 18-300 and 10-20 on my D7500 and about half with each lens…but rarely much over about 50-70mm. When I did swap lenses…just keep the shutter shield closed on poweroff and the lens mount aimed down…my bride was with me and I gave her the new lens to hold without the rear cap and quickly did the swap. Checked the sensor afterwards and no dust issues for me.

This was taken with a Sony AM4 with a Tamron 17-28 lens
