I wanted to make this post because of something that recently happened that really put things into perspective for me. I think we all need to make someone aware of where we are and have some form of communication in case of an accident. I recently had a fall and broke my foot as well as ruptured some tendons. I always carry an apple AirTag and whatever bag I have with me and if I’m somewhere extremely remote, I share my location with my wife once I arrive. I always carry a small first aid kit with me and have had to use it a few times over the years. Normally when I go out to shoot, I will walk anywhere from 1-5 miles and sometimes that is in very remote areas. I just turned 51 years old in December and I found out I don’t bounce back quite as well as I used to lol. Luckily when I had the fall and injured my foot, I was fairly close to home, but I was still over a mile from my truck. There was no one around to help, but I was able to drag my foot and get myself back to a parking lot so my wife could pick me up. I have also had some very close calls with poisonous snakes over the years as well as several bee stings. Wildlife photography is amazing and one of the best hobbies a person could have. Haven’t said that, there are definitely some inherent risks that go along with it. Luckily I am very fit for my age and should heal fairly quickly, but it is definitely going to be a long road.

OMG! That looks pretty awful. Hopefully you’ll make a good recovery.
A sensible warning.

i broke my arm tears ago, quite high, and the surgeon used 23 staples. It didn’t look as bad as that, but the scar is amazing. lol. 6 months after, they removed the plates, using the same scar, and I got another 23 staples! Warning, they bloody well hurt when taken out!

OMG. Looks pretty bad Steven. Sorry for what happened. I was out on Tuesday and took a pretty good spill myself. Landed on my left shoulder. I lost awareness of what was behind me as I was looking up into the trees and tripped over a tree stump as I was backing up I already have a bad right shoulder so I hope it isn’t too bad. I hope your healing doesn’t hit any roadblocks. Get well.

Definitely not the way I wanted to spend the holidays lol

Thank you for sharing your warning! I'm so sorry about the accident, but know that you will do the rehap work and soon be back doing what you love - and do so well!
Thank you. Luckily I have some images and video banked that I can work on once I feel better. Might have to do some window shooting for a while.

Thank you. It is definitely amazing how fast you can get into a predicament.

Iam so sorry you had this unfortunate accident and do hope you recover fully. Things can go crazy in just a few seconds. I remember one time I ventured off the parking lot at Zion NP. I did not go very far as I wanted to take a few photos. Anyway I lost my sense of direction and could not find the parking lot. Anyway after a short while I managed to find my way back. Anyway prayers to you. Larry

Thank you. Yeah a couple years ago. I had a similar incident with some bee stings and didn’t have my EpiPen. You can really get into trouble out by yourself like that every time I go out now I always let my wife know exactly where I’m going to be, he just never know what could happen

Absolutely. I was just walking back to my car along the shoreline when I heard a nuthatch. Looked up and before I knew it I was on the ground.
This happened stepping over a log and I didn’t realize there was a 2 foot hole on the other side of it because it was covered with leaves so all my weight came down on that foot. It’s funny because I was messaging one of the members Dave on here when it happened. I told him I am pretty sure I broke my foot lol

That will definitely ruin your day.

OUCH. Glad you were able to make it back. I don't do long hikes (mostly due to carrying camera gear), but I suppose even on a short hike if no one was around I could get in trouble. It happened to my older brother several years ago. This is a good reminder.

Yeah, I never thought about it much when I was younger, but you can really get into a world of trouble when someone don’t know where you’re at especially if you’re in a place that don’t have phone service. About a couple of the Apple AirTags I try to keep either in my pouch or bag when I go out.

Yikes!!!! Been there done that, have some impressive scars to show for it. I suspect you'll take the rehab very seriously, please do. At 71 I find it takes much longer to get back what you lose and that, often, the baseline is lower.

Hope you and Ralph are very much better very soon.

Jim

Looks like you will be out of action for quite a while.
Yeah, the surgeon said no weight on the foot at all for 4 to 6 weeks then will probably be in a walking boot for up to 10 weeks. After I get in the walking boot at least I can drive to some places and shoot things out the window Since it’s my left foot that’s hurt

Yeah, even at 51 years old I sure don’t bounce back the way I did years ago and I suspect it’s going to be a pretty lengthy recovery and not really sure if it will ever be normal again

Question about Apple Air Tags: do you need an Apple iPhone to read them? (I don't use any Apple products or apps).
To be honest, I’m not exactly sure. I know several companies make GPS devices as you can get to reach people in case of emergency that I’ve looked to in the past but being an Apple user I just found these to be cheaper and easier. It seems like they would work with Other brands, but I’ll check into that.
