Be safe out there

Yeah, even at 51 years old I sure don’t bounce back the way I did years ago and I suspect it’s going to be a pretty lengthy recovery and not really sure if it will ever be normal again

Hang in there. I'm still feeling the effects of a badly broken femur 2 years ago. Given your age and self reported fitness level, I suspect you'll do well. Don't get discouraged.

Thank you. My dad had the broken femur at 77y/o and is still struggling two years later. He can still walk but has a pretty bad limp

Hang in there Steven! Best wishes for a full recovery and kudos for reminding forum members of safety issues. You will of course have some downtime now but will have additional time for editing…. I’ve been there…

Thank you. Yeah it certainly pays off to let someone know where we are and have some way to communicate. You just never know what can happen.

I just looked and it has to be Apple. I’m sure there’s something similar for android
Looked at Amazon and there is a device called Tile by LifeMate360 for about $20. Samsung also makes a tag. Don't know details but you can look at them on Amazon.
I am an Apple guy but not a fanatic.

note there is a thread about satellite communicators/beacons here on bcg. when i get a min i’ll try to find it. you can get a plb which has no reoccurring fee, drop it in your bag and done. also garmin has a plan for their inreach that’s only about $8/mo

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure. I know several companies make GPS devices as you can get to reach people in case of emergency that I’ve looked to in the past but being an Apple user I just found these to be cheaper and easier. It seems like they would work with Other brands, but I’ll check into that.
So sorry to hear about your accident. Glad that you were able to get back to safety. Good luck with a speedy recovery.
With regards to air tags: a year or so ago I did a bit of investigation. There are other air tags that give more accurate location information, but you need to have phones (Android or ones with an app on them) that can recognize the air tag near by. Apple's Air Tags just needs Apple phones near by to give location information. No app needed. Also more Apple phones than Androids, so we went with Apple Air Tags. Things may have changed since I investigated, but somethings to think about.

Thank you. Yeah there are certainly several different options out there. In fact it’s almost overwhelming. I think some of them do require a subscription.

Good grief! That looks awful. Please make sure you do everything the docs & physical therapists tell you to do. At only 51, you should make a complete recovery.
Accidents happen. Whenever I'm out alone in a remote area - which is frequently - I make sure I have the following items with me: whistle (clipped to the outside of an article of clothing), mirror, cellphone (easily accessible but securely stored in a pocket), Apple airtag. Of course, I also make sure my husband knows where I am headed, check in when I arrive, and let him know whenever I am leaving one location to move to the next.

The whistle is a really good idea. I think I will order one lol

Wow that looks nasty, glad you made it back to get help. I have an AirTag attached to my keys which is always in my pocket for that reason! Good idea to post this and hope you have a speedy recovery.

Speedy recovery! I am the same age as you so I take it to heart. My slightly similar situation was 18 months ago when I was walking on rocks to get closer to a great blue heron. I crouched down to get lower and my shoe slipped on the rocks and my hand went down on a razor sharp rock to brace myself. Cut me very deeply and took about 2-3 months to fully heal. It drove home to me the same lesson: things change quickly and I'm too old to heal as fast as when I was young.

Thank you. Things can quickly turn for the worse.

Also worth saying that if you do use an iPhone 14 or higher with the latest iOS you should have satellite based SMS messages available as long as you have some clear sky visibility (if you're out of signal range). My wife and I always share locations with each other continuously.
Very good point. I normally send her my location before leaving the truck as well. Can never be too safe.

No subscription required for Apple Air Tags. We have one in all of our most commonly used bags.
Just remembered - we had 2 "extra" air tags so my husband came up with the idea of putting one in each vehicle. At first, I laughed at him, but then decided it's actually a good idea. We put one in each of the pockets on the back of the driver's seat. There is always one in the camera backpack I have on me.

Yeah, that’s certainly a good idea. I mean my situation wasn’t life-threatening, but if a person was in the situation like that something that simple could potentially save your life.

It's rough when you get to 50 for sure... I'm now 52 and hurt my shoulder late this summer. It's still not recovered and I am looking into some physical therapy to help. To make matters worse , I was bitten by a deer tick and ended up positive for Lyme, which has affected my eyesight. Hoping to get back to where I was prior to all of this. So yeah , things can change in a split second. Be careful, take precautions but get out there .
