Bench bugs are not insects, but small gray crustaceans that live on the forest floor and in gardens. They have gills - and therefore like it best to be dark and damp. That is why they hide under stones and wood on the forest floor during the day - or under the bark of old branches. At night they rummage around looking for food.

Here the front body of a Bench Biter - perhaps a very young Gray Bench Biter - it was only 7 mm long - they can be up to 20 mm.
