We went for a long drive today across Wisconsin to Prairie du Chien on the Mississippi River. The plan was to look for eagles and other raptors. The weather was great and themeratures were above freezing making for a nice day out. However, past cold weather has the Mississippi mostly frozen over where we were and the nice weather had the birds sitting in trees sunning themselves. We saw several bald eagles and as many other raptors sitting in the trees near the road. The flying birds we saw were flying away from us or were crows and pigeons. Unfortunately, the Great River Road in that area is narrow with few safe places to stop for photos when we did see sitting birds. We did capture a handful of shots as shown here including eagles and one Red-tailed Hawk. Next time will be better!

Thank you. That bird was in perfect position and did not seem to care about my presence though this was at a distance and across a mostly frozen pond. We will plan a trip to one of the larger dams in Central Wisconsin where there is always open water. Maybe we will get some more activity there.
