I just returned yesterday from a 19-day camping safari in Botswana. What an amazing experience to sleep under the stars, sharing the outdoors with the animals. We had elephants, leopards, hyenas, jackals, honey badgers, and yes, even a lion walk through our camp site! Here is a sample of the images I came back with.

Wow, those are all fantastic! Botswana is notorious for being one of the most expensive safari destinations around, but I bet you saved quite a bit by camping.

What a beautiful set! Sounds like you had an incredible experience. Well done👍👍👍

Beautiful shots! Congratulations! I am also a Sony A1 shooter. I don’t have the 200-600 so was wondering how you found in terms of light/aperture? Were there times early morning or late evening where you found this was a limitation?
I have been to Botswana and loved it. Camping must have been a great experience!

I spent quite a few days debating with myself about taking the 200-600 or the 400/2.8. I knew that the aperture of the zoom would be a limiting factor during the times of day when the light was best, but I was counting on the focal length flexibility to outweigh that. In the end, I think I made the correct decision for myself.

There were only two or three instances in which I really would have liked to have had my 400/2.8 instead of the zoom. Although, I don’t think I missed any shots; just had to shoot at high ISO. Camera focused just fine, and I didn’t even run these through any noise reduction other than LR default. Here are a couple of examples of those shots:

Thanks Mitesh. These are fabulous pictures. You now have me thinking of the 209-600. I have the 400 f2.8 and love it, but it’s quite big to lug around Africa. Thanks for your reply.
