I went out the other night to work on some milky way photos. I was using a lake in the foreground with the milky way in the background. It was about 2 am and I heard a loon - as you mentioned, haunting - gave me the chills. The lake is aptly named - Loon Lake.

Off the topic, but the increased number of satellites sure makes a good night photo tough to come by these days.
