Card readers…

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I have two Delkin readers, one for CF Express B only and one for CF B and SD. Both have worked good for me, but the doors have broken off both. Crappy design, but still work fine.

I have the much larger Prograde B/XQD that I leave hooked up to my desktop and the other two are for travel.

I recently picked up a new Delkin USB4 Type B reader for a desktop replacement. I states speeds up to 40G, but I have not tried it yet. While I can't speak to the new one yet, I think it might be one to look at if you are interested in faster speeds.

For size comparison. Delkin USB4, Delkin 3.2, Prograde PG04.

I also have both Delkin readers, the one for CfExpress B only and the one for both CFExpress and SD. They have worked very well for me. And I also have had the door break off one of them but it still works well. I would be happier if they had a sturdier door on the device. But for me, Delkin is the device to use.

i don’t care for the prograde ones, but they work fine. basically most all of them work fine.

personally the only one i’d avoid is the anglebird. it’s the only one that actually gave me problems, probably due to the drivers which you need if you want to be able to flash anglebird cfe cards.

i think generally speaking i like the 10Gb/s usb ones. 10Gb/s is fast, but it's also not too niche and less likely to be problematic.

of the card i have, i like the sabrent the best, mostly because it had the push-in-push-out mechanism and i like the rubber coating

i think the sony also has a push-in-push-out and it can also read xqd cards, although i wouldn't get it just for that feature.

i would not get a combo reader again. i’d just get a cfe reader and a sd reader

the anglebird and the owc on the left are big slabs of metal, and i dislike that in a reader, esp if you're carrying it with you. the shape of the lexar is annoying.

the owc on the right is usb4 and that's a decent feature, although probably not necessary.

i guess my top three would be sabrent, sony (although it's probably not a great value), and then the usb4 owc (although i think sabrent may have a usb4 now, and i tend to like theirs better)

Good grief John! You’ve tried just about everything out there! Thanks for the report….w/visual aids…👍😅

Fed up with junk card readers. Wanted a Sony w/CFE type B + SD with USB type “C” connection. Apparently they don’t make one. Who likes what? Delkin has one on Amazon that “looks good” but what do you find is the best thing out there. 🤯Thanks for your input….
I have the OWC reader V. 4.0 card reader. It’s very quick. Here is a link to the version that reads both ssd and cf b cards.

I make sure to keep the supplied cable with the card reader in a ziplock bag. My Sony card reader works just fine. My ProGrade works just fine.....after I took out the dang magnet that made it heavy and stick to things! It's now my back up.

In my experience, card readers don't "wake up". The device they connect to might need to, though. Assuming my computer is up and running - and the application, I've never experienced delays when connecting a card reader with card in it and starting to transfer images.

I used the Delkin CFExpress B/SD reader for a few years. It never failed, but I noted that it can get pretty warm. I saw OWC has their Type 4.0 CFExpress reader on sale so I tried it. It has more mass so a larger heat sink, and doesn’t get nearly as warm as the Delkin. Being Type 4.0, it also seems to download faster to my Mac. The Delkin is now my backup.

Thanks Ralph, I’ll check it out..

Hello , I use a San Disk SD card for my still photos. Usually 32. Or 64 gb Some one told me to use a high speed SD card for video. I would like to stay with the same brand since I have had luck. Any recommendations. These are used in my z6 2. Camera. Larry

This discussion is about CFExpress Card Readers which downloads cards that fit the slot you are not using.

Delkin has some SD cards with a minimum write speed of 90 MB/S, if you want faster switch to CFExpress that goes in your #1 Slot for minimum write speeds up to 2000 MB/S.

Maximum Write Speed for all SD Cards tops out at about 300 MB/S and about 3,250 MB/S for CFExpress.

I have and use the Delkin DDReader-54, and the Angelbird CFexpress-B readers and recently bought the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B / SD USB 3.2 Gen 2 Reader for $39. All have worked flawlessly for me on Windows PC's (desktop and laptops). The Angelbird is the fastest for me at 1600 MB/sec with the Delkin and Lexar at 1050MB/s, although testing has been a bit eratic since it depends so much on ports, cables and what else is going on in the computer. I briefly tried a Quanlex 3-in-1 CFexpress-B/XQD/SD card reader but it would not stay connected to PC with XQD cards so I returned it in favor of the Lexar. UHS-II SD read speed performance of the latter dual reader was very good at 250 MB/s. None of the readers get particularly hot with the Delkin and Angelbird cards that I use.

Karen: Did you have any problems removing the magnet on your Prograde reader. I find it to be an unnecessary feature that adds weight needlessly.

….I really appreciate all of the responses to this “card reader” thread. John Navitsky’s “gadget emporium“ was a bit over the top but helped my upgrade decision. Here was the frustrating issue… The “C” cable did not properly seat in the fancy unbranded (hint of failure) aluminum reader bought on Amazon with good reviews..🤣 But, it was advertised as an CFE/B + SD unit. This is what I needed as a “one size fits all solution“…Except it only worked 50% of the time without 🤬🤯😤. Of course Sony has a SINGLE card device which works flawlessly 100% of the time…. My Zf takes SD cards so I wanted a reliable reader that handled both sizes for travel. Not wanting to reinvent the wheel I appealed to the vast knowledge in this forum…….Thank you all!🙏

I have the Prograde reader which has the magnet in it.
I would like to remove the magnet or perhaps de-magnetize it if removal would damage the unit.
Any suggestions about either option would be appreciated.
De-magnetizing would be fine if it can be done without affecting the function.

Edited to add that I have I have found a thread on this site with comment on the subject although I have not come across any info on the thought of de-magnitizing the thing.
Thanks.

I am using two SanDisk "PRO-READER" Card Readers:

SanDisk PRO-READER Multi Card Reader (UHS-II SD Card Slot, UHS-II microSD Card Slot, CompactFlash Card Slot)

SanDisk PRO-READER CFexpress Type B Card Reader
(can transfer files at 650MB/s with the newer Delkin Devices 1.3TB BLACK 4.0 CFexpress Type B Memory Card)

(SanDisk has a desktop chassis to hold these as well as SSD magazines...I like a NAS plus external water resistant Samsung SSDs these days)
