ok, the good news is, it looks like we're seeing some real numbers now.

the down side is, it's a pita. i have to reboot to get each new card.

interestingly, the docs that come with the reader only claim 1600MB/s despite measured results of almost 1800

the sabrent rocket cards seem to be problematic in the pci reader in the pc.

i can't get the pc to boot with the 512gb cards in the reader. perhaps i initialized them on the mac. but seems to confused the booting.

i decided to try a 1tb card since i never used it before. it booted fine, but i got very low speeds (400-500MB/s).

i rebooted and tried it on 10Gbps USB at it was getting numbers in the 900MB/s (maxing out the USB). so the cards clearly aren't that slow, but something about them confuses the pci interface.

update 4/1 (no, really)

i've gotten new numbers on everything except the Sabrent Rocket 2230 cards and updated the original post.

the numbers jive pretty close to those published in SSD Review, so i think we can reasonably consider all the cards covered by either them or me to be comparable.

the Sabrent cards continue to elude me. i decided to order a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 pci-adapter card and i figure i'll try to see what kind of numbers i get from that and a 2x2 reader.

while these new cards (Lexar Diamond and Nexstorage B1 Pro) are faster than the Delkin Black and Prograde Cobalt, notice the random io performance on the Delkin/Prograde are substantially better. very interesting.

my general takeaway at this point is all the cards that break 1500MB/s are all very good.

@John Navitsky Thanks for posted these results, it takes time, money and effort to do this amount of testing.
Nice seeing results that correspond with other published results.

Is the issue with the Sabrent card/s, how/in what, are/were, they formatted?
Format them on the pce-i card first before testing?

I low level format my camera cards as soon as I get them in the fatest reader for each type, then do an in camera format to ensure camera compatibility in the first instance.
Have yet to have a problem following this procedure.

I have found some new cards operating in an odd way, some unresponsive, some no obvious format problem/s but displaying various issues, mainly intermittent reading errors, a quick run through my formatting procedure and all seems well.
 
with the 1tb sabrent card i did a full format in the pc with exfat, default cluster size.

normally i’d then do a full format in camera, but since i was having trouble with the 512 cards i was worried i’d make this card unbenchmarkable too, so haven’t yet

i would have done something similar with the 512 card, but i may have tried erasing it on the mac at some point, dunno
 
I purchased a couple of Delkin Black 325Gb cards in the recent sale. Results:

1. Angelbird USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 reader plugged into USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port:

2. Lexar USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 reader plugged into a Thunderbolt 4.0 port. (I don't know why this is so slow, more investigation needed):

The fact that (1) and (3) are almost identical indicates to me that the readers are not impacting performance. Further, that the numbers are close to John's PCIE reader numbers for the 512Gb and 650Gb Delkin Black cards. Although I do note that the 16 thread numbers are drastically faster using the PCIE reader. Now I need to find out what the deal with slow Thunderbolt speeds is.

Oh goodness, I seem to be losing the plot. The Lexar reader is not Thunderbolt, it is in fact just USB 3.2 2x2. I have corrected the above post accordingly. This aging business has little to commend it.
 
has anyone figured out the spot to look in the USB Device Tree Viewer that shows if your link is 2x2 or not?

i got the 2x2 port but the anglebird reader that's supposed to be 2x2 isn't breaking 1000MB/s.

i put one of the sabrent rocket 2230 modules in one of these 2x2 enclosures and i immediately got 2014MB/s write without a heat sink

I did a Winmerge of the 2 files to highlight the differences, I see no mention of 2x2 speed.

"Demanded Current" for the Sabrent is 0mA, for the Angelbird it is 896mA.
"Self Powered" for the Sabrent is no, for the Angelbird it is yes.

i’m very confused 🤣

random, semi conflicting thoughts

the enclosure must be 2x2, no way it could hit 2000MB/s otherwise

but.. i don’t see anything in the info that suggests it’s 2x2

is the anglebird really 2x2? maybe it’s 2x2 but has some other limitation?

so annoying. i may have ordered the lexar 2x2 reader 🤣
 
i will say i'm totally not trusting the anglebird reader at all. was getting like 400MB/s on the 2x2 port and then it looks like it corrupted the sabrent 1tb card. switching back to the sabrent reader and formatting the card... oy
 
I would be suspicious of anything that is not giving reliable results or as it seems - corrupting cards!
I would most likely return it to the seller for a refund or if that is not possible, destroy it then throw it out.

A new reader arrived this week this one reads cfe and xqd cards, both cards I have identify as "Asmedia ASM236X series" when plugged in.
Speed tests with the same pcie port and cable as in my other tests match or exceed the results I got with the first cfe only reader.

has anyone figured out the spot to look in the USB Device Tree Viewer that shows if your link is 2x2 or not?

i got the 2x2 port but the anglebird reader that's supposed to be 2x2 isn't breaking 1000MB/s.

i put one of the sabrent rocket 2230 modules in one of these 2x2 enclosures and i immediately got 2014MB/s write without a heat sink

and here's from the anglebird reader which is supposed to be 2x2 and a lexar diamond card which is fast, but i'm getting sub 1000MB/s.
I think the problem may be your port John. Take a look in the summary section of your Tree Viewer:

The text I have changed to red should read SuperSpeedPlus or higher. Superspeed is 3.2 Gen 1 which will only give you 5 Gb/s.

I have the Lexar and Angelbird USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 cards and both give nearly identical speeds as shown in my last post.

What is the computer you are testing it on ? Maybe a MOBO driver issue if you are sure the port supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2?

hmm. seems plausible. but i didn’t think it was possible to hit 2000MB/s without being 2x2 (aka “plus”?)?

Yeah, that has me beat too. I did notice earlier that the enclosure was way faster than the express cards when hit with multiple threads and that may have something to do with it. But that is only speculation on my part and an overreach of my knowledge of the USB protocol. Regardless, it would pay to check what your system to see what USB Host controller and driver you have. I use HWiNFO64 for this and mine looks thus:

Port 20 is your USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 20Gb/s port. Port 17 is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s port. If you get a reader that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (Angelbird or Lexar RW550 and probably others) then use Port 20. If you use a slower reader then use the port that gives you the best speed which may not necessarily be the faster port. My take anyway!
 
Not quite, I made a few changes today with some hardware and those ports are now reversed I am not sure exactly why yet (I have some ideas) but I know there is a lot more going on here than I fully understand at present.
Tomorrow I will try to contact someone who should be able to help me to better understand what might be going on.

So I got my Lexar 2x2 reader yesterday and combined with my 2x2 PCI-adapter I see:

I topped out at just under 1000MB/s on my 10Gbps USB, so it seems like it's working, although it does turn in slightly lower numbers than my PCI-adapter reader

i don't know if you can extrapolate those numbers, but note that that's faster than the Lexar Diamond (which is the fastest card on the list with the PCI-adapter reader) when used with the Lexar 2x2 reader.

The 1TB card that was giving me all those fits with the Anglebird reader. I formatted it in the Lexar reader and...

Interesting, these are Crystaldisk numbers? Presumably your USB tree now shows the port as being Superspeed plus enabled when the Lexar card reader is plugged in.
With a Delkin Black 325GB card, I get pretty much identical speeds (1,714 MB/s and 1,710MB/s respectively) using Angelbird and Lexar readers.
It indicates to me a compatibility issue between the Angelbird reader and some part of your system or CFE card (it makes sense that a Lexar reader and Lexar card presents no problem).
It would be interesting to understand why I am getting higher speeds than yours, especially since I suspect the Delkin Black cards are a little slower than the Lexar Diamond.
