Concerned With The Drop-in Filter For Nikon 800mm?

Looking at my lens this morning, I thought that the possible venerability for the weather sealing appears to be (to me) the drop-in filter. It doesn't appear to be a tight fit.

To play safe, as a precaution, I placed Gorilla tape over this area. Now it is completely waterproof.

Has anyone else experienced a concern with this subject? Do you think that I am overreacting?
