Cotton Carrier G3 Harness - opinions on

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

It was also mentioned about their difficult to adjust and I agree with that to some degree. I bought a second one that is adjusted for coats in the winter time then I keep my other summer on tighter fitting so this remedies that situation as well.

100% agree... Best purchase I've ever made. I have tried so many different carrying systems and straps.. I should have tried the cotton carrier G3 vest sooner. It's a joy walking hands free knowing the lens is secured and ready for fast deployment. Lately I've been running my Z8 + 600PF combo on it with the Hejnar foot. I mounted the CC adapter through the rear QD hole in the Hejnar foot, this dropped the entire rig about 3" , keeping it well below my chin so it does not get in the way. It's been a great setup, and I wouldn't want to be without it anymore. Tip: give it a few days to break in...it really does mold to your body over time. It's actually quite comfortable once setup correctly after its initial break-in period.
Heard it’s stiff, on the mounting, are you able to sit with it with that exact gear mounted? Everyone’s body geometry is different.

I agree with Steve ^ The Cotton Carrier is great; use it to carry my 600 tc on the Z9 whenever the shoot involves hiking or walking any distance. Minor annoyance as he mentions re the lug and the foot for tripod/monopod, but truly minor compared to other carrying methods given the quick use of the camera by the Cotton. It would be great if Cotton Carrier would evolve to deal with the arca foot thing AND to accomodate the long, heavy lenses, but as is it's an unquestioned great photography tool.
I have a flat, lever lock plate that attaches to am Arca Swiss foot. Using a 3/8 to 1/4 20 bushing, I attach the Cotton Carier lug to the bottom of the plate. With a flick of the lever I can attach this to the lens and then remove it when I want to mount the camera and lens on a tripod, or in my case a monopod. I adjust the lever lock quite tight. Feels no less secure than when I used to put the tripod over my shoulder with the lens attached for hiking.

Little lost for me. You have a plate with the CC lug. The lug is their round piece that is used to connect directly into their harness, correct so far?

What lever?

The plate with CC lug is removed in order for you to mount camera/lens on “whatever”.. Correct? What are you using, maybe another plate? to mount onto the tripod or the lug is removed and put in your pocket etc?

Why then do you need a plate.

This is confusing, sorry.

I am running a shorter 600pf lens, so yes I can sit with it. But honestly, you can just swing the lens left or right by 45 degrees and no concern of it coming off the vest mount (if setup correctly you must turn the entire camera and lens 90 degrees to lift it up and out of its mount) If I were sitting down, I would just swing the lens up to my left by 45 degrees, over my leg and not worry about it.

Yeah I kneel down all the time with mine in the vest resting across the top of my legs and have no issues.

This is confusing,
The purpose was to use the Cotton Carrier for hiking and for quick access to the camera for hand held shots but to also be able to mount it on a tripod or monopod without having to use tools to take off the lug. The purpose of the plate is to give me a quick disconnect from the Arca Swiss foot without using tools or taking time. The one I actually use has a trigger on the lever to avoid accidental disconnects.

I love the Cotton Carrier G3 harness, biggest lens I use with it is the Z 400mm F2.8 TC and it works well. I don’t connect the CCS hub to the lens foot or camera L bracket directly instead I put the the hub on a Kirk QRC-1 quick release clamp with loktite. The advantage of this is I can quickly remove the clamp and mount the camera on a tripod.

A pic is worth a thousand words- thanks!! This is exactly what I’m looking to do.

Where did you get this?

I have no idea where the plate came from originally.I put this together from parts in my tote full of things I no longer use but once had a purpose. This looks like it is a similar piece and the lever lock has a safety trigger. From B&H https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1771667-REG/3_legged_thing_lv_nkcl_lever_lock_clamp_universal.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&store=420&smpm=ba_f2_lar&lsft=BI:6879&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=13535675462&gbraid=0AAAAAD7yMh0Kgprsumb1MewOy1xF-Syfg&gclid=CjwKCAjw24vBBhABEiwANFG7y2vZ-RDyplzNJQzA_guYxIMgtwkUurbAirN1PMZ_rMbR0Ba2taXF8xoCN2wQAvD_BwE I replaced the foot with a Wimberly one that has a very low profile. It helps keep the weight close to my chest.

This weekend I carried a Z body with 180-600mm with just my hand and after an hour or so, it is no doubt exhausting. I have a sling strap, but it's not ideal as it sways by the hips and isn't ideal, so I started to look at options, and I think a camera harness makes the most sense. The one I was looking at is from Cotton Carrier - there are knock offs of it on Amazon at 1/3 the price, but I don't think I want to risk those.

Just reaching out to see if anyone owns one of these harnesses and what the opinion is on comfort, practicability and build.

Thanks
I am short and old and I carry a DSLR with a 500PF lens. I use the Cotton Carrier because it feels more secure than the Black Rapid, and the BR swings too far below my hip. I put the Cotton Carrier lug on the lens foot of the 500 PF and I have the lug set so the camera and lens sit horizontal on my chest instead of vertical downward.
I am able to carry the gear a long ways this way. If I am traveling and doing landscape or city photos with a shorter lens, I carry that the traditional way with the lens down.
After you use it a while setting it in the bracket comes easy.

Thanks! Yea I thought you’d a lower profile foot

I took your plate image and searched via google lens out of curiosity. There’s a variety of quick release plates that are similar in look. Haven’t checked if they have a safety trigger. I can see the QR lever.

Below is one I found via Google lens

So the Cotton Carrier folks have an offset lug that is flat on one end to allow you to put it on an Arca Swiss tripod head. I use that when I know I am going to use a tripod.
This isn’t clear. Are you saying they make another lug that is different than the lug shown by the above posters?

This is all I noticed. Never found their site helpful.

Yes. They make this one for tripod use. There is a rubber piece that goes between the lug and the camera to ensure a snug tight fit.
On all my gear I always check whether screws have loosened up. Including the ones in my head.

They also make the long arca Swiss plate which I have on my 600 prime. You mount the lug on the rear of it. The wimberly foot I have for my 600 allows enough room even with the lug attached to still use a tripod but not enough to balance a gimbal. The hardly ever use a gimble anymore anyhow because of the size is in weight.

I totally agree on the black rapid system that was by far the worst system I have ever used I sent it back after three days. If you walk a lot, especially hiking those are no good for many reasons or at least that’s my opinion
