D500 metering

Ihave a D 500 and use Auto ISO all the time. However, I use aperture priority auto ISO, not manual . You might want to try Auto ISO with Aperture Priority and see if it works better for you.

I usually set ISO low at 100. High at the max allowed in the D 500. Shutter speed minimum set in Auto ISO varies, but my usual range is 1/500--1/1600 or 1/2000 depending on shooting needs (BIF vs sitting birds) and available light.

Regarding the D500 does anyone have a recommendation regarding the high end setting for the ISO, I set mine at 6400 with little confidence. Noise isn't as big of concern as it use to be now that I us Topaz DeNoise but I still don't wish to push ISO more then needed . However I would like to have the most out of the D500 or even the D5 for the highest setting to help me with low light mornings, since I prefer to favour the fastest shutter speeds.

I have mine set to max out at ISO 6400.

I maxed mine out at 6400 for an indoor rodeo for the whole shoot and it was fine after some post-processing. I know a guy that regularly shoots his even higher than that and cleans it up.

The how high ISO question on my D500 largely depends on where I am and what I'm shooting. Normally 6400 is the highest I'll push it. However if I'm in deep woods in low light I'll go up to ISO 8000. Surprisingly the photos at 8000 are usable. Not sure I'd want a 16X20 acrylic or metal print made but they are usable (I call it my Sasquatch maximum - if I see Sasquatch walking through the woods, the photos would at least be usable on one of the "hunting Sasquatch" shows. :) ).

Thanks guys 6400 it is, I too tried higher but must say I was not happy with the grain especially in low light shooting. It's nice to hear what others are doing, I have been shooting for a very long time (started in a darkroom -- film days) and I must say this brave new world of digital has lots to learn. Jeffnles1 good luck with your Sasquatch shot, I know somedays it seems those settings for just such a shot are all you get. Thanks Again.
