This large family group were coming in from the dusty interior to a nearby waterhole. These pachyderms appear taller, but in fact they are the same height as other elephants, it is just their poorer desert diet that makes them "leaner". They do, however, have bigger foot pads, an adaptation to the sandier terrain they have to negotiate. Additionally , they can go for long periods without water (females and infants 3 days--males up to 5 days ). This shot was taken shortly after dawn with D60 and Tamron 70-300mm @ 125mm. f6.3, ISO 100, 1/640 sec., handheld.
