I buy mine from OWC…their enclosures seem to be better built and I’ve had very few problems with them. I typically get the enterprise drive version that costs a bit more because those drives are supposed to last longer in 24x7 operation. For main drives…go Thunderbolt but for everything USB (even the older A type) is fine for backups. All my backups except BackBlaze happen via CarbonCopyCloner tasks overnight and only the first one takes very long anyway.
