Thank you for your thoughts. I often have a difficult time removing (maybe I will try the new "remove" tool) OOF, relatively wide shadows (branches) like this.

Seems to be the winner.
I like the flow of the composition in the second image, it's a pleasing shot to look at, if that makes sense. The first shot, on the other hand, has the bird singing "in your face" which is cool, dynamic shot. Both are great for different reasons, and I can't say one is better than the other.
