DXO Pure Raw vs. DXO Photolab 6

I was talking about the Global Lens sharpening option in PureRAW:

This tends to create strange looking images when it comes to feather detail in birds.

Also, I do not apply much if any sharpening in LR as what PureRaw does a good job with sharpening.
Well this is interesting. I knew to turn off LR Sharpen and lens profile...but this is in PR2? Is it in the PL6 as well? Is it possible to tell me how you find this? Thanks!

I have both PR2 and PL6. PL6 has a plugin for LR. PR2 does not. I also use Topaz A1 and Denoise. What I see is that some images are better with either DP-XD and some with Topaz AI or Denoise. I don't use PR2 these days with no plugin capability. Wish I understood why but when it matters with a high ISO image, I will try all three.

This makes it a little confusing.

I know how it works in Photolab, there is a separate sharpening using unsharp mask that I keep turned off, but there is also a lens sharpening module with a slider to dial in the amount (masking is possible). The lens sharpening seemed to work fine but I'm not looking that deeply at bird feathers.

I conducted a fast test of an image shot at ISO 12800 with the z9 and the 100-400mm lens. All three images are cropped and displayed at 100% in Lightroom Classic. By the way, Pure Raw 2 absolutely includes a Lightroom Plug-in. All 3 images are SOC, with only the Camera Neutral profile added. z91_1061_DXO.dng is processed in PhotoLab 6. Only Deep Prime noise reduction was applied. The unsharp mask feature was turned off. It was exported to Lightroom with 'Denoise and Optical Corrections Only'. z91_1061-NEF_DXO_DeepPRIME.dng was processed in DXO Pure Raw 2. Only Deep Prime noise reduction is applied. Exported to Lightroom with DXO Optical
Corrections (Global lens sharpening and Lens Distortion) turned off. For whatever reason, (and in my opinion) PhotoLab 6 appears to produce a cleaner image when exported to Lightroom. Please feel free to tear this test apart.

I thought folks were saying the Z 100-400 was not supported by DXO?

Dxo has yet to create a specific lens module for the 100-400. Rumored to be available in March. However, the z9 is supported and most all DXO (photolab6) editing functions are available.

Do you have any side by sides with a supported lens? Might be a better test?

Bill FYI, I noticed that DXO has added detail (haha) to their webpage, or at least I had not noticed it before. I have found their webpages difficult to digest the difference with XD. Curious why they use the words high or low? In any event they don’t do much to explain the difference or show the difference. They just say it’s so. So thank you for this thread as it may shed some light.

“Since the introduction of DeepPRIME as part of DxO PhotoLab 4 ELITE in 2020 and DxO PureRAW in 2021, technology has progressed. Effectively, it has kept learning, and so have we. Improvements in speed were introduced as part of DxO PhotoLab 5 ELITE and DxO PureRAW  2, and 2022 brought another progression: DeepPRIME XD.

Introduced exclusively in DxO PhotoLab 6 ELITE, DeepPRIME XD is a new process that is offered alongside the existing DeepPRIME settings. XD stands for Extra Detail.

DeepPRIME XD is a more intensive and effective algorithm that delivers more detail and contrast than DeepPRIME in either high or low ISO images. Expect smoother results, noise-free bokeh, finer details, and more realistic and natural color.

Noise reduction has never been better.”

Bill, Here is the same test using a supported lens. The 24-120z. With a supported lens you get more editing opportunities in PhotoLab 6. I left them all at their default settings for this test. A supported lens in PhotoLab 6 includes Lens Sharpness with controls over Global, Details, and Bokeh and Lens Distortion Correction which includes a manual setting and a setting based on the supported DxO module. Pure Raw also includes Global Lens sharpening and Lens Distortion Correction. However, there are no controls. See StefanSC's image above. z91_1066_DxO-1 is the image processed in Photo Lab 6. z91_1066-NEF_DxO_DeepPRIME-2 is the image processed in Pure Raw 2. Hope this helps.

It wasn't always a part of PR (I see where this information on LR plugin from your first link applies to PR 2) and one reason I moved to PL6. I stand corrected. And I am happy to see them listening to needs of customers.

Would it change your mind knowing it was a plugin, or would you still prefer photolab?

Thank you for posting this. The two top ones look about equal to my eye. Do you recall what setting you used for the Photolab one, I assume it was not Deep Prime XD? I guess that's what the decision comes down to: is having access to the deep prime XD the reason to go with Photolab or not.

Bill, yes it was processed in deep prime xd. And I can tell you, on most high ISO images there is a significant improvement when using XD compared to Deep Prime. In noise reduction and clarity.

That is good to know.

This DXO link is very useful. Wonder what the processing time is like on an M1 Mac. They make no mention on their their hardware page.

I suppose taking the free trial and trialing it would do the trick. they do give a list of compatible GPUs somewhere on the support site. I imagine it takes forever without the GPU.

I loaded the free trials of both programs.
When I use Deep prime XD, it produces an all black corrupt file.
Changed performance settings from GPU(Intel ARC A750) to CPU, and problem goes away.
Evidently the ARC A 750 doesn't have the "juice" top run Deep Prime XD

If you use NIK plug-in filters, PL 6 has the added benefit of acting as a host program for non-destructive editing. The engine is the same in both programs. For me, I'd rather have the control PL provides. That said, if DXO does not start supporting Nikon's Z lenses to better effect, I'll likely stop using PL 6 in favor of Capture One (have both now).
