Wonderful catch and photos. That's a red-bellied snake; they're fairly common here in Pennsylvania but very secretive and rarely seen, it must be warm in your area, although I have photographed garter snakes on snow so perhaps red-bellied snakes are also pretty cold-tolerant.

I took this series of images of an Eastern Bluebird eating a small snake this morning. First off, I've never seen a snake in February nor have I seen one when it's 39 degrees outside. I thought it was super interesting and neat to experience.
