Don't go on a weekend during the rut, you might be trampled by tourists and cell-phone photographers if you do. The last couple of times I've swung by the visitor center (on weekdays) there were tour buses both large and small there and their passengers were milling around. If you can walk back in on the closed roads or go other places in the elk range you'll probably have a much more enjoyable time.
