What level of exposure compensation do you generally use to shoot birds in the shadows of trees with a bright sky? I shoot a Nikon D500 with the Nikkor 200-500 5.6 vr

I have been a big fan of your work Steve ever since I started my bird photography a few years ago and am so thankful for your expertise! Yesterday was shooting a Red-headed woodpecker and had a hard time dealing with the background brightness but the shots did get considerably better with a +1 exposure comp. I did forget to try my F1 button set to Spot metering in the excitement.
